Reader Interview with Joel Ohman
Who or what was your inspiration to write about post-apocalyptic, dystopian sci-fi?
I've read a lot in this genre, so I would say it’s a mix of a lot of different things. I really just wanted to explore this question of, "What gives a person worth?" Is it their usefulness to society? Is it because someone loves them? Is it because of how they look? Is it because of their health or ability? As a Christian, I believe that all people have worth, because they are made in the image of God. I wanted to explore some different takes on this question. I think that the post-apocalyptic/dystopian/sci-fi genre was the best vehicle to tackle some of those deep philosophical questions in a fun and interesting way.

Why do you write? Is it for fun, or because you have something you need to say in your writing?
Some writers are loath to say their writing has a message, because maybe they think doing so diminishes their art (not true, in my opinion), but I think that everyone has a message in their writing, even if they aren't as consciously focused on it—and that's a good thing. My message is in my epigraph: "Because everyone matters - Psalm 139".

Why the title Meritropolis?
I wanted a short one word title that was a clever—or at least semi-clever—play on two different words. I like "Meritropolis" because it combines "Merit" and "Metropolis," two words that are great for describing a city where each resident's worth is measured by a score given to them.

In Meritropolis how were the animal combinations decided upon? For example, I know you chose to write about a bion (bull-lion), as well as many other freaks of nature. So what I want to know is how did you decided which animals to meld together and why.
I have a big list of animal combinations that I came up with before I began writing the book, and I tried to work in as many as I could. Sometimes the only criteria was that I liked the way the name sounded. Look for many more in the following books!

Can you tells us about your characters and who/what inspired them?
I am a big believer in John Truby’s approach to building a “character web”, because this deepens the relationships between characters and helps to make each of the characters more complex. Absent building a good character web, it can be all too easy to fall into the not-very-true-to-real-life good-person/bad-person false dichotomy where your protagonist devolves into this I-can-do-no-wrong character and your antagonist is just pure evil. I was very much aiming to show the imperfections and brokenness in each of the characters. My thinking as a Christian influences this to some degree, given that the Bible teaches that we are all essentially the same; we are all sinners—only God is perfect.
Do you have a favorite genre that you like to read?

I read pretty much everything! Fiction, non-fiction, you name it! I am of the opinion that, as an author, I can learn something from almost every kind of writing. Sometimes, it most definitely is a matter of learning what not to do—but, on the whole, I love to read a wide variety of writing styles, genres, etc.

Are there any books that have inspired your own writing?
I read A LOT so there are many different things that have shaped my writing over the years, but I wouldn't say there was any particular book, or books, that I was consciously looking to for inspiration while writing Meritropolis. Looking back though I can definitely see different threads of influence in almost everything I have read over the years that contribute toward making Meritropolis what it is: the strong protagonist of Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series, the philosophical bent of C.S. Lewis’ fiction, the dystopian setting of Hugh Howey’s WOOL series, and many more.

Are there any authors that have emerged in the last three years that have caught your interest?
Hugh Howey is an author that I really like that has caught my attention lately. I would highly recommend his WOOL series!

Don’t forget!
Meritropolis is marked down from its regular price of $5.99, but only for a limited time. Feed your Kindle by picking up a discounted copy for just 99 cents, but make sure you do it before December 2!

Product Review - Liquid Chalkers

Product:  Liquid Chalkers

Manufacturer:  Paper & Twine

Review:  My daughter grabbed these as I took them out of the box and she was reading how to use them and bang I had a Christmas tree drawn on my big picture window- she wrote Merry Christmas on the bathroom mirror and it came off easily since we decided seeing ourselves was the reason for the mirror and the art work was getting in the way of that.  See it here on Instagram .  She wants to make another now that she knows how to use these fun pens.

I would recommend these to teachers, parents, business owners that paint on their windows, anyone - these are easy to use and clean up - we have coffee house downtown that has people paint of the windows and these would work slick - Loads of fun for the family and  your classroom - I plan on painting my windows in my classroom for Christmas this next week - and the fun is the kids can help.

We have only painted on windows and mirrors so far - but look forward to more creative pursuits.

These markers helped us figure out this one little secret I discovered that helped skyrocket our family's creativity and had friends commenting on our kids creativity.

Hi, my name is Louise Fox from Paper and Twine. If you're looking for chalk markers, I'd like to tell you why I think these are your best choice. I am a proud mother of three and was looking for an easy, effective way to encourage creativity in my family. I stumbled on liquid chalk and worked out some simple fun things to do with the markers that have had friends and teachers asking what we are doing with the kids to have them be so creative.

The Best Chalk Markers I've Used - Initially, I didn't like the other chalk markers I'd used. There were too many issues so I spent months of time and thousands of dollars to research everything that would make an amazing marker. I found the best liquid chalk ink, best markers and most premium tips. It was expensive but I was so excited when I finally got a small batch of these markers created for my family and some close friends to test. The results were wonderful. One of my friends suggested these were so good that we should sell them to everyone so here they are. I sourced top, artist quality premium ingredients for these as I wanted the best. Now you get to have it as well.

Your 365 Day Money Back Guarantee - I won't be happy unless you're happy. Try these markers for 365 days and if you don't like them, I'll give you a full no-hassles refund.

Limited Time Bonus - Buy a set today and I'll send you a short guide via email on how we use these markers around our house and how this has inspired the creativity of our family. It's a simple secret but you're going to love it.

Book Spotlight - Drowning - Jassy De Jong

Drowning
Four Fatal Flaws of a Romantic Hero by Jassy De Jong
My first introduction to romance novels were the piles of old Mills & Boons which could be found in every bookshelf in our house (I have three older sisters). This was in the early 1980s, when romantic heroes were very different from what they are today. As an impressionable pre-teen, my role models were the flashing-eyed, self-obsessed, controlling and jealous archetypes that populated those pages. No wonder I started off dating all the wrong guys… it took me decades to overcome this conditioning.
So, in the spirit of public service, here are four “don’ts” to avoid in a romantic hero, whether real life or fictional. I’ve included made-up 80s excerpts to illustrate.
Jealous 80s excerpt:
Roger’s eyes blazed. “Don’t let me see you speaking to that man again… ever!” he exclaimed. “You are mine… all mine and only mine. I’ll have no stranger devouring you with his lustful gaze!”
“B-but Roger,” I stammered, “that man is my brother Tom!”
Jealousy… definitely one of the least likeable and most destructive traits a romantic hero can possess. A heroine who ends up with a jealous man can expect to be alienated from her friends, estranged from her family, and have her choices criticised and controlled. Which brings me to the second flaw…
Controlling 80s excerpt:
“What will it be, Monsieur?” the waitron asked, as I admired the sumptuous decor of this three-Michelin-starred restaurant.
Roger’s powerful jaw tightened decisively. “We’ll have a bottle of the Chianti, the caviar starters, and the lobster mains, Luigi.”
By all means choose Mr Controlling as your romantic hero if it’s the last choice you ever want to make. He’ll decide everything for his heroine, from what she wears to what she eats and where she travels. She’ll never get another look at a wine list, and if she’s on a diet and he fancies dessert – well, let her eat cake.
Violent 80s excerpt:
“We’re leaving now!” Eyes flashing, Roger grasped my arm in his own powerful, muscular grip, holding me so tightly with his sculpted fingers that I cried out in pain.
If the alarm bells aren’t ringing so loudly for this romantic heroine they sound like a fire truck, she must be deaf. The only time your hero should grasp your arm tightly enough to cause pain is when he’s pulling you out of the path of a runaway train, or a charging elephant.

Patronizing 80s excerpt:
“What’s that” I asked, looking at the small clockwork gadget with interest.
“Oh, it’s an invention I put together in between writing my PhD and winning my Olympic gold fencing medal,” Roger told me dismissively, adjusting the collar of his starched Armani shirt. “I’d explain how it works, but it’s rather complicated and you wouldn’t understand.”
The subtext here, of course, is that you need to be the owner of a penis to understand this. Really, why would a romantic heroine want to trouble her frail, feminine mind with its workings… or with any knowledge at all beyond how to remove her lacy underwear on command? In future, she must do the sensible thing and leave these weighty issues to the menfolk… or, of course, she could make the really smart choice, and look for a different hero!

Book Spotlight - A Touch of Nerves - D C Hampton

17152935
Title:  Touch of Nerves

Author:  Dennis Hampton

Synopsis:
Captain Ben Hawkins is finishing up a routine Army inspection at the Tupelo Chemical Research Facility when he discovers that several pounds of the nerve toxin VX-212 slated for destruction can’t be accounted for.

Soon an FBI team is on the trail of Mahmoud, who can’t forget his father’s fate in the Iraq-Iran war, and Saman, whose parents were on Iran Flight 655, shot down by the American cruiser, the USS Vincennes. Their hatred of the country they blame for their losses leads them to the United States for revenge.

Colonel Kashani, a senior Iranian intelligence officer, stumbles upon the plan and he understands the dangers of enraging the American dragon. His challenge is to stop a terrorist plot without being ensnared by the FBI. And when the FBI investigation reaches a dead end, Hawkins must decide whether to risk his career—and possible arrest—to stop the attack, even if it means working with a foreign agent.

D.C. Hampton’s debut novel, A Touch of Nerves, may be set on the battlefield of America’s “War on Terror,” but the book is a far cry from your typical action narrative. Inspired by his two sons who served in Iraq and the Persian Gulf during the Iraq War and his own time serving in the U.S. Army, Hampton brings depth and humanity to characters that might otherwise be painted in the two-dimensional “hero” or “villain” archetypes. With Hampton’s passion for history and global affairs, A Touch of Nerves brings a fresh perspective to the long history of tension between the United States and Iran.

Praise for Dennis Hampton’s Book:
“The story includes a wealth of details as Hampton weaves a complex plot.  A conceivable threat and suspense-filled plot keep readers engaged until the end.  Hampton eschews the genre’s typical plot holes and vague facts and (his) handle on international relations gives the terrorists credible motivations.”  - Kirkus Review

“Highly Entertaining and Realistic!   I really enjoyed reading this book as it grabs you from the very beginning and doesn't let go. The author clearly did a lot of research; the book's scenes are filled with vivid descriptions as it takes you to multiple locations all around the globe. What's more is the fact that the story itself is eerily realistic! I have been a military/suspense/fiction fanatic for quite some time now, and this book definitely tops my list. A must read, for sure.” – Amazon Reviewer

Product Review - ELF Mineral Infused Face Primer in Green

Product:  ELF  Mineral Infused Face Primer

Review:  I saw this at Target and I have a red tinged face from all the anti-aging products I use - not all the time is my face red just some days - so I decided to try the green tone correcting toner - I have oily skin and can shine through my make-up in a few hours - but with this I can go almost all day without a problem - it smooths on easy and fast and then I put on my make-up and BOOM I have a great looking face that lasts for hours and hours without the normal shine through.

I am now on my 2nd bottle and still love it - the bottle is small about 1/2 ounce so it doesn't last long but at about 6 dollars it is a great deal that I love and love and love.

Product Review - Ultrasport Travel and Sports Towel From Shandali

Review:  This is tiny when it is folded and put into your luggage - you can get dry because of the absorbency of this small yet powerful towel - what a great idea for travel and for the gym - but I also like it for just wiping up spilled water - it is fantastic for spilled water and really gets the floor or counter top dry quicker then any other towel I own.  This is like a shammy yet way better - it is small - light and ultra absorbent -

It comes in 3 colors I got the blue and I love it - it has a hook/loop to hang it up to dry and I can't say enough good things about this towel - except you will love it too - give it a try - why drag around a big towel when this does the work of a big towel or two and takes up less space and dries faster then regular cotton towels - get this towel and use it for all of your activities where a towel is needed or would be appreciated.

Description:  LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD WITH 83% LESS WEIGHT: Weighing less than 150grams-that's less than an average apple-the Shandali Ultrasport Travel Towel is 51% lighter than leading cotton alternatives. With so little to carry, you will be able to bring your towel anywhere and use it daily.
STAY ULTRA-DRY NO MATTER WHAT THE OCCASION: Our towels are 100% microfiber, which drys enormously faster than the leading alternatives. Microfiber drys 287% faster than cotton, and it will even dry quickly when you have it folded up or stored in your bag. You see-microfiber, a nylon alternative, was designed specifically to be highly absorbent and quick drying. Join the future of towels!
HANG IT UP WITH OUR EASY-TO-USE HOOK: One feature we're very proud of it our "easy-to-use" hook. Other towels either have a very small hook that isn't really that useful or are missing the hook altogether. We've developed our hook to be very practical and work in a variety of situations. Be confident that you'll never need to set your towel on the group to get dirty.
SOFT ON YOUR SKIN: Tired of itchy towels? Yup, we were too. That's why we decided to use a 100% microfiber towel with a high thread count, the result is a super soft, super-durable, and pleasantly enjoyable towel that you will love. Owning a towel that is enormously practical, comfortable, and in a fashionable color is important. We urge you to get your first towel today.
SAVE YOURSELF MONEY WITH A MULTI-PURPOSE PRODUCT: We want to help each customer save at least $50 this year by using our towels for a number of activities, removing the need to buy a towel for each activity. Our customers have used the Shandali Ultrasport towel to travel to Europe and Asia, to carry in their golf bag, to bring to the gym as a workout towel, to dry and hold up their hair after taking shower, to use at Pilates and Yoga classes to stay dry, to packing in their kayak and rafting bags-to even bringing them to the Burning Man festival in Nevada as their "go-to" towel. Whatever purpose you have use for, we're 110% confident that you'll love using your Shandali Ultrasport towel. We urge you to take action and try one today.

Book Review - Forced Disappearance - Dana Marton

22540141

Title: Forced Disappearance

Author: Dana Marton

Review:  Glenn Danning, successful business owner and brainiac,  is kidnapped in Venezuela while on "vacation". His family is concerned and calls for the help of the US government.

Miranda Soto is given her first assignment at Civilian Personal Recovery Unit to bring home the body of Glenn Danning after he had been reported missing for four months.  What Miranda didn't tell her boss was - that this would be personal because Glenn Danning was her first love while she was at MIT.  Glenn and Miranda were to brainacs that love to do scientific experiments when it came to the human body or in other words they discovered sex for the first time with each other. 10 years has passed since the last time they saw each other and sparks fly as they struggle to escape Venezuela.

Dana Marton created a well crafted story that moved along giving the reader enough information to keep them reading wanting to see what happens.  The book is written from both Miranda and Glenn's point of views so you are in both characters heads though out the book and to my surprise I wasn't lost while reading the book.

I'm not sure the author did this on purpose but it was pretty obvious who was the villain in the story and I was pretty sure the reason as well.  I have to admit sometimes I did feel like we were turning our wheels for a chapter but then again the author put away action and focused solely on character build up.

The end felt a little rushed as if the author needed to keep the book under a certain word count.

Book Review - In His Shadow - Tiffany Snow

22304852

Title:  In His Shadow

AuthorTiffany Snow

Review:  Tiffany Snow takes the reader on an endless ride with action, romance, heart felt pain and mystery- everything you have come to know and love about Tiffany Snow is in this book.  The author has the ability to take the reader on a visual mystery never once giving away too much until the right moment and every character has a reason for being in the book.

The protagonist is Ivy and to call her damaged would only be one side of her many faces.  She has the ability to make you want to hug her, scream at her and tell her to run far away from Devon her mysterious Alpha male who has decided he is interested in her. Ivy’s past has made her damage because she can’t seem to find who she is without seeing the scared little girl she once was but as the book progressives she world sacrifice her own life to protect those she cares for and loves to the point of betrayal.  Trust me you will scream at her a few times “Don’t Go There Stupid Girl” and she does go there.

Logan is Ivy’s best friend the only person in the book that seems to have a head on his shoulders but at the same time he makes Ivy Co-dependent on him. Logan is the friend that girls are always looking for but just like Devon there is more to Logan’s feelings for Ivy than just a friendship. He will do anything for her and Devon gets in a few jibs that make you question the past.

Devon, the mysterious man who Ivy meets at her place of work can’t seem to stay away from even though he puts her life in danger man times. Ivy knows that Devon is dangerous but for some crazy reason she can’t seem to run away from him again making herself Co-Dependent again on someone. My only complaint is I hate that he calls her luv -it drives me batty.

The mystery is exciting and will take the readers over the ocean and back home once again.

I would like to see Tiffany Snow help Ivy find her voice so she is able to stand on her own two feet.  I want to see Ivy function without the need of a man or someone taking care of her and I hope the author can see that as well.

The reader will be given many sex scenes that I almost feel the book is 60-75% sex or leading to sex and 25% mystery, giving the book an unbalanced feeling towards the end. Tiffany Snow knows how to write sex scenes leaving the reader all hot and bothered.

The very end of the book will have you cringe but cheering at the same time.  It’s the perfect book to cuddle up with a cup of something warm to realize you will not put it down until you turned the very last page

Why I Read this Title:  ARC sent by Netgallery

Synopsis:   Ivy Mason is hiding—from her past, from herself, and from anyone who could love her. The only kind of love she’s ever known hurts, leaving scars on her body and soul. Now, her world may be boring and predictable, but that’s exactly what she wants. Until Devon Clay walks into her life.

A lonely man in a deadly profession, Devon works as an agent for an underground British agency known only as the Shadow. Nothing about him is safe or ordinary. The danger that consumes his life turns into an addiction Ivy can’t resist...even if it proves fatal.

As Ivy’s past begins to catch up with her, she wonders if love really is the twisted thing she’s always thought it was. Maybe it could be more with this man, who’s shown her that she doesn’t need to protect herself from everyone. Is what she feels for Devon worth the risk? He may save her heart or break it, if she manages to stay alive.

Product:   Pure Phytoceramides

Manufacturer:  BioGanx

Review:  I do see a difference with this product - I feel pumped up a bit everywhere - but my hands look much younger than they have in the past years - they seem to get thinner and the skin falls inside the veins and bones but now they look pumped up and fuller - making them look younger - if this can help my hands then I know it is helping my face - I have a long face but this is filling it in a bit - longer use will help know for sure about this - but my hands look so much better than they have - I wish I had a taken a before shot for everyone else to compare - but I can see the difference -

Good product with vitamins to boot - gluten free and with winter who doesn't need extra vitamin D - give it a try - money back guarantee so what do you have to lose - well a few years maybe?
