Book Review: Slumber by Becky Bird

Slumber
Title: Slumber

Author: Becky Bird

Stars: 3

Review:
Slumber has one of many reason I dislike YA books because they are cheesy and might make readers feel like they are being talked down too.
While the story is fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty with characters from the fairy tale it lacks heart and soul of what makes fairy tales last for hundreds of years being retold many times over.
Prince Thomas character changes to quickly with a lack of build up. Lucy however is the redeeming character of the book.  This book might be more perfect for girls between the ages of 8-13 years old.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Becky Bird Slumber

Synopsis:
A YA retelling of classic fairy tale Sleeping Beauty

Prince Thomas cannot take the throne without a queen. Though the problem isn’t his lack of suitors but his refusal to marry a princess that is less than perfect.

The cardinal presents him with an opportunity: a quest to find the most beautiful princess in the land who has been in slumber for a century. But, unbeknown to the prince, the cardinal plans to kill him as soon as the prince embarks on his quest, and take the throne for himself.

Luckily, Prince Thomas’s path crosses with Lucy, a spirited orphan runaway, who saves his life and convinces the prince to continue the quest. When they eventually find Princess Aurora, they also find another contender – Prince Philip – vying for the princess’s heart.

Despite their mutual disdain for each other, Lucy agrees to assist the prince, and Thomas accepts her help to keep him alive long enough to beat out his competition and return to rule his kingdom alongside his perfect bride.

They just don’t count on falling for each other in the process.

Book Review: Traitor Games (Tarnished Heroes #3) by Sidney Bristol

Traitor Games (Tarnished Heroes #3)
Title: Traitor Games (Tarnished Heroes #3)

Author: Sidney Bristol

Stars: 4

Review:
This is the second book int he Tarnished Heroes series I have read.  Some might say this can be read as a stand alone novel but I wouldn't recommend it.  There are lots of characters from the other books that are spread though out this one that new readers will become lost.
The story moves quickly lots of gun batters, running, car chases, and endless sex scenes that fill in the gap when the other characters are taking charge in the background.
The spy, romance, thrillers is a exciting series that readers have comes to know and love about Sidney Bristol.  It is every spy movie you have seen and made into a book series readers can't get enough of. Readers will wonder is it really over or has it just begun?

The characters are charming, and comes off the page with the details the author provides but keeping the story moving forward.

I repeat start at the beginning of the series before you start this book.  Each one is a romance spy thriller that will keep readers wanting more.

Book Review: Dangerous Lies (Shades of Leverage, #2) by Claudia Shelton

Dangerous Lies (Shades of Leverage, #2)
Title:  Dangerous Lies (Shades of Leverage, #2)

Author: Claudia Shelton

Stars: 3 1\2

Review:
While this is part of a series the story is also a stand alone.
The story is a inta romance which seems to be a go to for romance\suspense author.  The characters are decently written with enough background for the story to make since. The story is a fast paced but details sometimes get a little lost.  While readers might enjoy that the pace of the story it could have been slowed down to add more details to the "twist" in the story.  I think if more times had been on the twist it would have been more of a shock for readers.

Cold Heart, Warm Cowboy (Cold River Ranch, #2)
Title: Cold Heart, Warm Cowboy (Cold River Ranch #2)

Author: Caitlin Crews

Stars: 4

Review:
An intriguing modern day love story that can make your emotions run from sad to happy. You can imagine, or perhaps know, the many pitfalls that can entrap a young couple. But compound that with a secret marriage and an apparently unwanted pregnancy by one of the two who feels that they would not make a good parent owing to their upbringing. Then put the icing on the cake by adding in a nearly death experience where the individual loses their memory of the two years prior to the event. Can love find a way to conquer these events and bring two star crossed lovers together again? Well to find out you will have to read this excellent book.

I have rated this book 4 stars and would purchase it for a friend.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

About The Author:
Caitlin Crews
Caitlin Crews discovered her first romance novel at the age of twelve, in a bargain bin at the local five and dime. It involved swashbuckling pirates, grand adventures, a heroine with rustling skirts and a mind of her own, and a seriously mouthwatering and masterful hero. The book (the title of which remains lost in the mists of time) made a serious impression. Caitlin was immediately smitten with romances and romance heroes, to the detriment of her middle school social life. And so began her life-long love affair with romance novels, many of which she insists on keeping near her at all times, thus creating a fire hazard of love wherever she lives.

Caitlin has made her home in places as far-flung as York, England and Atlanta, Georgia. She was raised near New York City, and fell in love with London on her first visit when she was a teenager. She has backpacked in Zimbabwe, been on safari in Botswana, and visited tiny villages in Namibia. She has, while visiting the place in question, declared her intention to live in Prague, Dublin, Paris, Athens, Nice, the Greek Islands, Rome, Venice, and/or any of the Hawaiian islands. Writing about exotic places seems like the next best thing to actually moving there.

She currently lives in Oregon with her animator/comic book artist husband and their menagerie of ridiculous animals.

Review:
A very pleasant historical romance that will keep your interest from beginning to end. Through trial and tribulations she becomes enamored with the hero who rescued her and is maintaining her in his home that he shares with his sister. While her background is open to speculation her deepening love for her rescuer is not and as it blossoms will her troubled hero return the love she is offering.

Book Review: The Tracker (The Dregs #1) by Leslie Georgeson

The Tracker (The Dregs #1)
Title: The Tracker (The Dregs #1)

Author: Leslie Georgeson

Stars: 2 1\2

Review:
The Tracker is part of a series by Leslie Grorgeson it isn't perfect but it isn't a bad book either.  The story feel like it might start to become a little BDSM when he makes her his slave but stay with graphic and simple "steamy romance"
Readers like the concept but many the a little less damaged souls wondering around would have been better. The back story of each characters is thought out and readers of course if you are reading this series will make sure to suspend you belief.  Each book reads almost the same with a woman needing their help and each one coming to their rescue.
The books have women who are damsels in distress who fall in love with the damaged souls.  Characters dies and unless you are paying attention you might lose count on who is whom. readers will feel the book winding down only to have the author throw you in for a second half of the story.  Each book goes though this processes leaving readers find themselves a little bored at times.
Readers will want to yell at the female lead as she "tries to protect those she cares about." when in face she ends up needing to be saved once again.

The story is old and while the author tries to polish it up the series so far falls flat over using the first story.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Author Leslie Georgeson

Synopsis:
I’m a trained killer. An expert tracker.

I’ve done despicable things. My soul is damaged. My body impaired. That’s what happens when you are a soldier for The Company. I was discharged a year ago. Now I am a dreg. Worthless. With a bounty on my head. I’ve become a creature of the night, hiding in an underground maze during the day. Because I’m not ready to die yet.

She comes to me one night, needing my help to find her sister. The moment I see her, I want her. Her goodness calls to me, makes me yearn for the impossible. She brings life back to the deadness inside me. I’m no good for her. I will do nothing but corrupt her. But I’m a callous bastard. I can’t resist her.

I try not to care for her, but somehow she slips under my skin. She makes me weak. And there is only one thing in this world I am afraid of. Weakness.

I’ll never be good enough for her, so I have to finish this job and send her on her way.

Before she destroys me.

This is an 8-book series. These books are romantic suspense with sci-fi elements. Each contains a separate romance with an HEA (and no cliffhangers!) However, it is recommended that they be read in order to get the full "dreg" experience. These books contain strong language and adult situations. Recommended for readers ages 18 and up.

Book Review: Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come by Richard Preston

Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come
Title: Crisis in the Red Zone: The Story of the Deadliest Ebola Outbreak in History, and of the Outbreaks to Come

Author:  Richard Preston

Stars: 4

Review:
The first book I read by Richard Preston was The Hot Zone which is now a Mini Series.  You can't watch the new without hears Ebola.  When you realize that deadly Ebola outbreak are mainly found in African nations it doesn't make it any less terrifying.
While Richard Preston has an ability to write an amazing story using the news, medical and first hand accounts he does not sugar coat the details in which they have watched people die from Ebola.  At times the stories and accounts will turn stomachs knowing how easily this disease could be transmitted across the oceans.  Away from the 3rd world nations and right to your own back door.
The author gives stats, detailed accounts in hopes readers will open their eyes to the delicate balance we have in the world.  This is must read book for those interested in Ebola or infectious diseases.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher Random House, for the Advance copy of Richard Preston Crisis in the Red Zone.

Synopsis:
This time, Ebola started with a two-year-old child who likely had contact with a wild creature and whose entire family quickly fell ill and died. The ensuing global drama activated health professionals in North America, Europe, and Africa in a desperate race against time to contain the viral wildfire. By the end--as the virus mutated into its deadliest form, and spread farther and faster than ever before--30,000 people would be infected, and the dead would be spread across eight countries on three continents.

In this taut and suspenseful medical drama, Richard Preston deeply chronicles the outbreak, in which we saw for the first time the specter of Ebola jumping continents, crossing the Atlantic, and infecting people in America. Rich in characters and conflict--physical, emotional, and ethical--Crisis in the Red Zoneis an immersion in one of the great public health calamities of our time.

Preston writes of doctors and nurses in the field putting their own lives on the line, of government bureaucrats and NGO administrators moving, often fitfully, to try to contain the outbreak, and of pharmaceutical companies racing to develop drugs to combat the virus. He also explores the charged ethical dilemma over who should and did receive the rare doses of an experimental treatment when they became available at the peak of the disaster.

Book Review: The Killer You Know by A. M. Taylor

The Killer You Know
Title: The Killer You Know

Author: A. M. Taylor

Stars: 3 1\2

Review:
The story reminds me of a TV series that is currently on TV.  They try to prove that the person who is accused of Murder and convicted innocent and it has a Pod cast. The female lead instead of a Lawyer she is a cop.
While the story is predictable and everything falls into place perfectly the character stand out and give readers a glimpse that maybe not everyone who is in jail are guilty.
I will admit the author use of certain terms which are not regularly used in America.
The story is a little to long and sometimes the details are over used but it moves slowly.

Boo Review: The Liar in the Library (A Fethering Mystery) By Simon Brett

Title: The Liar in the Library (A Fethering Mystery#18)

Author:  Simon Brett

Stars:

Review:
A non violent murder mystery set in a small English coastal village. That's an oxymoron that a murder could be non violent. But this one was accomplished using stealth and poisoning by a very cunning individual. Hence the term non violent. Think of a modern day Miss Marple and friend as they dig into the mystery to clear one of the pair who is deemed to be a person of interest to the police. The crime is neatly wrapped up at the end in typical British fashion. If you enjoy British crime fiction, in the style of Agatha Christie, you will not want to miss this offering.

I have rated this book 4 stars.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

Synopsis:
Having been booked to give a talk at Fethering Library, successful author Burton St Clair invites his old friend Jude to come along. Although they haven?t met for twenty years, Jude is not surprised to find that St Clair hasn?t changed, with his towering ego and somewhat shaky relationship with the truth. What Jude hadn?t been suspecting however was that the evening would end in sudden, violent death.

More worrying, from Jude?s point of view, is the fact that the investigating police officers seem to be convinced that she herself was responsible for the crime. With the evidence stacking up against her, Jude enlists the help of her neighbour Carole not just to solve the murder but to prevent herself from being arrested for committing it.

Book Review: Buried (Agent Sayer Altair #2) by Ellison Cooper

Buried (Agent Sayer Altair, #2)
Title: Buried (Agent Sayer Altair #2)

Author: Ellison Cooper

Stars: 4 1\2

Review:
Ellison Cooper Agent Sayer Altair series started off chunky and lack a rythem and I question if it would be worth reader book two.
Having read book one I still was lost on the characters but the details are filled in slowly as the story moves forward.  The story takes place after book one with lots of different characters who are called misfits but are able to solve a missing person case, serial killers and start of a darker friend who is helping Agent Sayer Altair .
The story moves a little more smoothly and while it is dark the secondary story I found pulled me and I wanted to know more about Agent Sayer Altair study.  I found many times her logic in the test a little flawed but the author create an interesting dialog that will have readers wonder what creates a Psychopaths. Why do some kill and why do some live a "normal life"
The secondary story will keep readers wanting more from the author and her series.

Book Review: Iron Will & Justice at Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch: Montana Legacy Book 2) by B.J. Daniels

Title:  Iron Will & Justice at Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch: Montana Legacy Book 2)

Author:  B.J. Daniels

Stars: 4

Review:
The book can be a stand alone read or part of the series.  The characters are interesting and readers know right away what is happening but not who is after them.  The characters are well written and their background makes since as the story progresses.  The romance is another insta love with of course a happy ending but it takes some times to get there.
Their is action, redemption and romance. Everything readers are looking for from B.J. Daniels.

Title: The Stranger Next Door (Winchester, Tennessee #3)

Author: Debra Webb

Stars: 4

Review:
Debra Webb is able to create a well balanced story that seems to start off in two different direction but soon leads to the same ending.  The author pulls out all the stops for the level of creepy people this story has.  The female lead his very likable and readers will be able to connect with her quickly.
The story is fast pace and keeps readers on their toes even if they think the know they are right it might find there is still more to learn.

The Rancher's Unexpected Nanny
Title: The Rancher's Unexpected Nanny

Author: (s) Mary Sue Jackson, Leslie North

Stars: 2 1\2

Review:
The book is a simple romance.  Of a man who is selfish and can't move beyond his loss than making out with his daughter kindergarten teacher\nanny.  The story move quickly the characters are ok nothing stands out they blend into the background of the story that lacks any get up and go.
The story moves slowly from page to page as the characters are on a page.
The Rancher's Unexpected Nanny is a forgettable romance for a reader who needs something to read between flights.

Book Review: Attracted to the Earl (Imperfect Lords #3) by Bronwen Evans

Attracted to the Earl (Imperfect Lords, #3)
Title: Attracted to the Earl (Imperfect Lords #3)

Author: Bronwen Evans

Stars: 4 1\2

Review:
A very good historical romance story of two individuals from opposite sides of the social scale. Both suffered the worst childhood that you could imagine and have overcome them to a point. But now they have been brought together by circumstances and have to face the reality of mutual attraction. These are not teenagers but individuals in their early 30's and know what they want and what is permissable by ton standards. Can true love overcome these obstacles and a happy ending be had for all concerned parties? Read this stunning tale to find out.

I have rated this book 4.5 stars.

I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review. Thank you Frank for your review

Synopsis:
What’s an earl to do?
The Earl of Argyle has died suddenly, leaving his brother Guy Neville at a complete loss. The dull-witted second son, as his father used to call him, Guy is now responsible for the estate and his brother’s seat in the House of Lords. Shamed by an inability to read or write, his distress is multiplied by an inquiry from a dyed-in-the-wool bluestocking who wishes to use the Argyle library and study a rare plant on the estate. Guy’s first instinct is to decline her request—until he catches a glimpse of Miss Abigail Pinehurst.

How’s a girl to behave?
Abigail cares for only one thing: plants. She is unconcerned about how she looks, what she wears, or the impression she makes on men. An orphan who turned to books for solace in a miserly, cruel institution, she now makes her living illustrating the greenery she adores. Lord Argyle, in fact, with his uncanny memory and chiseled features, is the first man to capture her attention—a ridiculous distraction since he is so far above her station. But her unreasonable heart has a mind of its own.
