Book Review: Don't Tempt Me by Lori Foster‏

Don't Tempt Me
Title: Don't Tempt Me

Author: Lori Foster

Stars: 4 out of 5

Review:

I am always delighted when I read a well written book with characters you could meet in your own neighborhood. I was not disappointed with this offering by Lori Foster where the characters are large as life and could well be in any family or gathering. The heroine tugs at your heart strings and immediately garners your sympathy and support. It is easy to see how she does that exact same thing to the hero of the story. A modern day love story that mirrors life and is sure to please most readers.
I gave this book a four star rating and would recommend it to anyone looking for a modern romance story to pass the time
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

Synopsis:
Jason Guthrie has no time for entanglements—between helping out his widowed brother and teenage nephew and getting his hometown back on its feet, his days are spoken for. But his nights are another story… And when his lovely new neighbor, Honor Brown, reluctantly accepts his help in remodeling her house, Jason finds himself wishing his handyman skills could knock down the defenses she keeps building around herself.

Martial arts teacher Sullivan Dean knows real danger when he sees it—even when it takes the form of the gorgeous blonde helping her friend move in across the street. After putting his wayward past behind him to focus on teaching control to troubled kids, Sullivan has learned to avoid party girls like Lexie Perkins. But Sullivan can't seem to keep his hands off the real woman behind that flirty charm—or keep his heart from landing at her feet

Book Review - Publish like a Pro: A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing - Michele DeFilippo

Title:  Publish Like the Pros:  A Brief Guide to Quality Self-Publishing
Review:  There is a lot of information in this little short book.  I never knew so much went into the publishing of a book.  I can tell you that with reading and reviewing books I have come across so many that just are not anywhere ready to be read by anyone outside of the author and their best best friends.  So many books are written and yet not adequately edited and proofed.  Mistakes an every page and problems with the word flow, not to mention the mixing up of future and past tenses.  I have slogged through more of these disasters then I really want to admit too.  Maybe if the authors had read this book then my experience would have been much more enjoyable.

It costs money to have your book edited, but it is worth it.  If I pick up a book, sent for review, and I notice mistakes right at the beginning- I know things are not promising.  There are rare books that make up for all the mistakes with a fabulous story(Switched by Amanda Hocking for one…lots and lots of mistakes but a great story), but most do not.  Looking past spelling errors or spelling check errors that change the word to another word but spell it correctly….I hate those…it just tells me you let the spell check run without so much as a glance…is uncomfortable for the reader and lets face it work.  If I have to work to read a book I’m not going to read that book…work is for textbooks, The Bible and the like…not for enjoyment- which I hope to find in the pages of a good book.
Self-publishing is going to cost you, but why bother putting out a book hardly anyone will read because of the quality of the book, print, editing, proofreading, printset and the like.  You worked hard writing the book, now work hard getting the best look for your book so that readers will give it a chance.  I find most of my favorite books come from friends that suggest them to me…word of mouth…or browsing the bookstore looking at covers and reading the back for an idea of what I’m getting into.  Reading takes time, time is money  and I hate to waste such a precious resource on something not worthy of it.

The bottom line with this book is; that if you are going to do something,…..do it right!  This is written by the owner of a self-publishing house so remember she has great ideas, but so do others out there.  Make sure to research who you want to help publish your work and make it worthwhile.  Whatever you decide I have to say that it is going to cost…lots…be prepared to spend in the thousands plus to get your book out there.  Maybe a few vanity copies for you and your friends is all your book is worth...think about it...is it that good?  Maybe it is and if so then do it right!

Book Review The Scottish Lord's Secret Bride

The Scottish Lord's Secret BrideTitle: The Scottish Lord's Secret Bride

Author: Raven McAllan‏

Stars: 4 out of 5

Review:
An enchanting tale of young love which is rekindled after several years separation owing to miscommunication by both parties. This story takes the reader into the Highlands while exploring the differences in what constitutes a marriage in Scotland versus a marriage in jolly old England. The story is well presented and has a very likeable cast of characters whom the reader will have no problem identifying with. Written by an author I have not read previously but who will definitely be put on my must read list.
I have given this book a four star rating.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.

Synopsis:
The next exquisite Regency romance from Raven McAllan, The Scottish Lord’s Secret Bride will whisk you off your feet and sweep you into an opulent world of scandal, secrets and desire!
Secrets never stay buried for long…
Reluctant heiress Lady Morven Weston is tired of her mother interfering in her love affairs. At twenty-six there’s only so many more society balls she can attend before resigning herself to life as an unmarried maid.
But when Lord Fraser Napier, the man Morven ran wild with one long, hot summer, returns to Scotland, his shocking revelations change everything. Fraser never annulled their whirlwind marriage all those years ago!
Preparing to take up his ancestral seat, Fraser’s not letting go of his secret bride that easily – he needs an heir. It’s only a matter of time before Morven surrenders to Fraser’s seductive touch and finds herself in his bed…

About The Author:
 Raven McAllan
Raven lives in Scotland, along with her husband —their children having flown the nest—in a house much too big for them, surrounded by beautiful scenery, which inspires a lot of the settings in her books.
She is used to sharing her life with the occasional deer, red squirrel, and lost tourist, to say nothing of the scourge of Scotland—the midge, and her house with the dust bunnies who congregate. They must know they won't be disturbed.
A lover of reading, she appreciates the history inside a book, and the chance to peek into the lives of those from years ago. Raven admits that she enjoys the research for her books almost as much as the writing; so much so, that sometimes she realizes she's strayed way past the information she needs to know, and not a paragraph has been added to her WIP.

Book Review The Last Woman Standing

The Last Woman Standing by Thelma Adams
Title: The Last Woman Standing

Author: Thelma Adams

Stars: 4 out of 5

Review:

This book takes you into and through the time before, during, and after the famous shootout at the OK corral in Tombstone Az. But it does not look at it from the participants viewpoint but rather from a young girl/woman who came to Tombstone, from San Francisco, hoping to marry one man but instead ends up in love with Wyatt Earp. It is a journey of self discovery fraught with many different perils and humiliation. The writer has done a great job of depicting the time and danger in the west.
I have given this book a four star rating.

I obtained this book from Amazon in Kindle format.

Synopsis:
Two decades after the Civil War, Josephine Marcus, the teenage daughter of Jewish immigrants, is lured west with the promise of marriage to Johnny Behan, one of Arizona’s famous lawmen. She leaves her San Francisco home to join Behan in Tombstone, Arizona, a magnet for miners (and outlaws) attracted by the silver boom. Though united by the glint of metal, Tombstone is plagued by divided loyalties: between Confederates and Unionists, Lincoln Republicans and Democrats.

But when the silver-tongued Behan proves unreliable, it is legendary frontiersman Wyatt Earp who emerges as Josephine’s match. As the couple’s romance sparks, Behan’s jealousy ignites a rivalry destined for the history books…

At once an epic account of an improbable romance and a retelling of an iconic American tale, The Last Woman Standing recalls the famed gunfight at the O.K. Corral through the eyes of a spunky heroine who sought her happy ending in a lawless outpost—with a fierce will and an unflagging spirit.

School!!!! WAHOOO!!! SUMMER IS OVER!!

Sooo does the title tell you anything about what today is?
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL!  3 of my kiddos are all in school and I am so happy, scared, excited, nervous and everything inbetween.

Number 3 is a very shy little girl until she gets comfortable so I am nervous for her but so excited because she is ready for this new adventure and I am ready for her to take this step.

Number 4 is going to be very lonely with just me and I am sure I will hear him ask for his siblings constantly.  However I think once he gets used to the idea of having mom all to himself he is going to be so happy.

More happy news I have started Daily Burn last Wednesday and I plan to review the program in 3 days or when my 13 week program is finished.  As of right now I can barely make it up the stairs without my legs screaming at me to sit down and never get back up.

I am not looking to lose weight but have the energy I need to chase around a 3 year old.

Working on first school project. Yup 5th grade is doing a scrapbook page about themselves. They got this Thursday and School starts on Monday.

Martin: "Mom I don't know what I like."
Me:"Do you like Pokemon, Space, Dinos, Art, Ocean?"
Martin: "Yes"
Me: "That is what you scrapbook."
Martin: "Can you just do it."
Me: "No its your project but I will print out the photos,"
Martin: "Well At least you are doing something."

AHHHHH ‪#‎motherhood‬ where no matter what you do it will never be enough.

Book Review - Wake - A Watersong Novel - Amanda Hocking

Wake (Watersong, #1)
Title:    Wake – Watersong Series Book 1
Author:  Amanda Hocking
Review: This is a story about two sisters who have lost their mother(she’s alive but living in a group home.)  The oldest sister has pretty much raised the younger sister Gemma.  They love each other, but the relationship is strained due to their mother’s issues.  You feel for both sisters, the one who wants to be free and the one who wants to be young, but feels responsible for everyone and everything.  I’ve known both of these personality types and they can butt heads more often than not.
The story revolves around three girls who have shown up and the disappearance of some residence of the small seaside town.  Gemma becomes involved with the three and the story goes on from there but I don’t want to ruin it for you.  Romance is in the cards for both girls, even is one is not as willing to embrace it at first.  I really liked the way Gemma’s romance developed and yet her sister’s determination to be responsible made the making of her romance even sweeter.  Alex and Daniel are men I wouldn’t mind getting to know, both different and yet the same where it matters.
Wake kept me turning the pages until the bitter end and now my 12 year old daughter is reading it.  I loved the idea of the water singing to Gemma and the ending left me wanting to get my hands on the next book as soon as possible.  The ending was a bit scary and the idea of Gemma, who is sweet, driven and competitive, being involved with the three strangers is worrisome.  Will she become one of them or will she find a way to be free?  Will her sister help save her or will she be lost forever?  I want to know and think that waiting until November a bit unreasonable.  But what choice do I have?

If you enjoy paranormal teen romance you will enjoy this book.  If you enjoy Amanda Hocking’s books then this is a must read for you.
Give the Watersong series a try, I don’t think you will be disappointed.
Publisher:  Published August 7th 2012 by St.Martin's Press.
Copyright: 2012
Pages:  309
ISBN:    9781250008121
Quick Review: 4 Stars out of 5.
Where Did I Get the Book:  Purchased at a book signing with the author.
Synopsis:   Fall under the spell of Wake—the first book in an achingly beautiful new series by celebrated author Amanda Hocking—and lose yourself to the Watersong.
Gorgeous. Fearless. Dangerous. They're the kind of girls you envy; the kind of girls you want to hate. Strangers in town for the summer, Penn, Lexi and Thea have caught everyone's attention—but it’s Gemma who’s attracted theirs. She’s the one they’ve chosen to be part of their group.
Gemma seems to have it all—she’s carefree, pretty, and falling in love with Alex, the boy next door. He’s always been just a friend, but this summer they’ve taken their relationship to the next level, and now there’s no going back. Then one night, Gemma’s ordinary life changes forever. She’s taking a late night swim under the stars when she finds Penn, Lexi and Thea partying on the cove. They invite her to join them, and the next morning she wakes up on the beach feeling groggy and sick, knowing something is different.
Suddenly Gemma is stronger, faster, and more beautiful than ever. But her new powers come with a terrifying price. And as she uncovers the truth, she’s is forced to choose between staying with those she loves—or entering a new world brimming with dark hungers and unimaginable secrets.
Amanda Hocking
Author Biography: I live in Minnesota, and I write young adult paranormal romance and urban fantasy mostly. The My Blood Approves series is about vampires in Minneapolis, and its available now. I also wrote the Trylle Trilogy, which is a paranormal romance without vampires, shifters, mermaids, fae, angels, dragons, ghosts, or ninjas.
My latest book is Hollowland - a zombie urban fantasy set in the dystopian near future. It's a bit more violent and gritter than my other books, but there is still romance. Mostly though, Remy kicks a lot of butt.
I also enjoy Red Bull, Jim Henson, Batman, Jane Austen, Star Wars legos, and I absolutely hate long walks on the beach out of my intense fear/hatred of wet sand
My favorite authors are Kurt Vonnegut, Chuck Palahniuk, Bret Easton Ellis, Alan Moore, and J. D. Salinger, but I don't write anything like them. I have an obsession with River Phoenix, and I've seen Silence of the Lambs more than any other movie, even The Dark Knight. If I were trapped on a deserted island, the one thing I'd take with me would be a boat capable for taking me home.
I'm also the guitarist in a band called the Fraggin Aardvarks, and even though its even twice as cool as it sounds, we haven't had a practice in like two years, so I'm not sure that technically we are still a band. But we never broke up, and it's an awesome thing to tell people, so I'm sticking with it. (We even had a synethesizer!)

Guest Blogger: The Great Debate: Netflix vs. Hulu vs. Amazon Video By Cassie

The Great Debate: Netflix vs. Hulu vs. Amazon Video

What better way to relax on a day off than watching a great movie or two? Streaming services have made it simple for just about anyone to watch some of their favorite movies and TV shows with little effort. You can often skip the commercials and watch in HD inexpensively, making it a great alternative to cable and a good choice for those too busy to watch TV on a regular basis (sometimes the cost of cable isn’t worthwhile).
With a streaming service, you can watch during your own availability so you needn’t rush to the TV at any specific time, and finding what you’re looking for can take less than a minute. Sometimes you can even find new episodes of TV shows only one day after they’ve premiered on cable, allowing you to keep up with some of the most popular series without altering your schedule or paying a lot for a service you wouldn’t use otherwise.
Not so fast though; if you’re ready to subscribe to a streaming service or simply check one out, you may first want a better understanding of what each service has to offer. You’ve probably heard of Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Video before, but what’s the hype really about and which one takes the cake for the best streaming service? Let’s take a look.

Netflix
As an entertainment blogger, I’ve written about Netflix quite a few times. In my opinion, it’s one of the best streaming services available because of what's offered for the price. Plans cost between $8 and $12 per month, depending on whether you want standard definition, HD or Ultra HD streaming. How many people can use Netflix at the same time also varies with each plan (with the limit being four screens being viewed at once).
Netflix is especially great for families since it allows you to enable parental controls if you prefer, and they also have a great selection of kid-friendly movies and TV series available. They categorize everything by genre and subgenres, making it easy for you to find titles you might be interested in, and you can also use their search feature if you already have something in mind. For kid-friendly videos, you can even filter the results by character.
Closed captions in English are available for every video you stream on Netflix and subtitles in a variety of different languages are offered as well (though not every movie or series will be available with subtitles in certain languages). Perhaps one of the most beneficial features of Netflix though is the ability to watch everything commercial free and from a variety of different devices.
Netflix is compatible with game consoles (such as the PlayStation4, Wii U, and more), smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, Blu-ray players and streaming media players (such as Roku, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Nexus Player and NVIDIA Shield) so you don’t have to have a PC to enjoy it. Another great thing about Netflix is that you’re now able to create user profiles on your account so your friends and family can watch without messing with your browsing history.

Hulu
If you’ve decided to avoid subscribing to cable TV, Hulu might be the best option for you. Certain TV shows are available on Hulu the day after they premiere on cable, so depending on whether or not Hulu has current episodes of the shows you’re interested in, it may or may not be a better deal than cable.
Hulu has also expanded its library of movies available, offering a good selection for just about anyone. Like Netflix, movies are categorized by genre and subgenre and a search bar is available so you can quickly find whatever you’re looking for. The downside is that not every movie or TV show is available with your subscription plan without an add-on subscription, and commercials are included on the lowest priced plan.
At the moment, ShowTime is the only add-on available, and it costs an additional $8.99 per month on top of the usual subscription fee of either $7.99 or $11.99 per month. The add-on could be worthwhile if there are some shows you'd like to keep track of, but be sure to take a look at the selection first during a free trial.
Speaking of free trials, Hulu only offers a week for free before you have to pay up or cancel your account, whereas Netflix gives you a whole month. In my opinion, Hulu falls a little short compared to Netflix (unless you’re more interested in current TV shows) since not only are they stingy on the free trial, but they also don’t guarantee that every video will be in HD.
However, Hulu is compatible with a few devices that Netflix is not, and that alone might make it a bit more worthwhile for you. If you’re looking for a streaming service that offers parental controls though, you might want to look elsewhere (though they do have a good selection of kid-friendly titles).

Amazon Video
Here’s where streaming services get a little different; if you already have Amazon Prime, you have Amazon Video. If you shop on Amazon’s site frequently, Amazon Prime is an excellent service that will allow you to access exclusive sales, receive unlimited 2-day shipping on most purchases, stream music, receive free e-books, watch videos (of course!) and more.
Amazon Prime is definitely worth the cost ($10.99 per month or $99 per year), but you can subscribe to Amazon Video alone for $8.99 per month if you prefer. Similar to Hulu, Amazon Video allows you to subscribe to add-ons for an additional fee, though it offers more add-on options than Hulu does, such as Starz, Acorn TV, Comic-Con HQ and more. Amazon Video also allows you to try a 7-day free trial of add-on subscriptions, so you don't have to commit to the price before trying them out.
As far as streaming services compare, at least in my opinion, Amazon Video is somewhere in the middle between Hulu and Netflix. It has increasingly become a better service over the years, adding more videos to appeal to a variety of users. Though I believe Netflix is easier to use, I would say Amazon Video may be the second best streaming services out of the three!
If you'd like to check it out for yourself, Amazon Video does offer a month-long free trial. As far as kid-friendliness goes, it appears you can set up some parental controls (though the process doesn't seem as simple as on Netflix), and Amazon Video does have a nice selection of titles available.

Consider Your Location Though.

Unfortunately, these streaming services aren't available globally, so you might want to take your location into consideration or install a Virtual Private Network (VPN) before you subscribe. Not only will a VPN keep your device protected while you stream, but it’ll also unblock geo-restricted content, so you’ll be able to access these streaming services from anywhere.
Even when the service is available in your country, you may want to use a VPN to view the video selections available to other countries (certain movies are not available in certain countries). To learn more about this, check out Secure Thoughts’ article on Netflix.

Out of these three streaming services, do you have a favorite? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
