Title: Mundo Cruel: Stories
Author: Luis Negron, Suzanne Jill Levine (Translation)
Review: Full disclosure-I didn’t read the whole book…it
is short…but it is not my thing at all.
Sex, language and the 1st story was about a child having sex
with many, many , many people including his priest right after baptism. Not my thing at all…not even a little bit.
That is about all I can say about this book of short stories….I
will not be reading the rest. My rating
is based on my experience and I did not enjoy the bits I did read at all.

Synopsis: "Hilarious and heart-wrenching,
provocative and pitch-perfect, each story is a tiny, transgressive explosion. I
feel inadequate to the task of expressing just how wonderful this book is...read
it slowly, and listen close; here is a master storyteller at his finest."
–Justin Torres, author of We the Animals
Luis Negrón’s debut collection reveals the intimate world of
a small community in Puerto Rico joined together by its transgressive sexuality.
The writing straddles the shifting line between pure, unadorned storytelling
and satire, exploring the sometimes hilarious and sometimes heartbreaking
nature of survival in a decidedly cruel world.
Author Bio: Luis Negron shares deeply personal tales in
his upcoming collection of short stories, called Mundo Cruel, coming out in
February 2013.
In Sunday’s New York Times opinion pages Luis shares a
beautiful and heartbreaking story about his experiences growing up in an
impoverished family in Puerto Rico and the reaction of his parents when he
tries to share his joy of reading Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women.
Suzanne Jill Levine is the winner of PEN USA’s Translation
Award 2012 for her translation of Jose Donoso’s The Lizard’s Tale. Her
acclaimed translations, which include works by Guillermo Cabrera Infante (Three
Trapped Tigers) and Manuel Puig (Betrayed by Rita Hayworth), have helped
introduce the world to some of the icons of contemporary Latin American
literature. She is the translator of the upcoming book of short stories by Luis
Negron called Mundo Cruel, out in February 2013.
