The First Zombies Chapter One Dead Awakening - Josh Atkins

The First Zombies Dead Awakening
Title:    The First Zombies – Book One of the Dead Awakening

Author:  Josh Atkins

Review:  The First Zombies - Book One of the Dead Awakening has a fun beginning with the reader thinking they were thrown into the middle of a story with no background than all of a sudden the TV says "You are dead."  That's right our Hero David is a college student who loves playing Zombie Video games. He is stuck with his roommate Mark's girlfriend Gina waiting for Mark to come home from "Studying in the Library."  Mark arrives home and orders pizza and that is when the story really starts going with the dead walking the streets.

The Author Josh Atkins paints a very simple yet fun beginning to the Zombie outbreak.  The First Zombie is a quick read of around 8,000 words but in those 33 pages you meet several different characters that have you worried who will die and who will survive.  Like all Zombie story there is an outbreak, this time it is a mutation of rabies and if you are bit you become one.  The First Zombie story takes a page right out of the show Walking Dead with the nail biting moments and amazing imagery that makes the reader sick to their stomachs.

The author Josh Atkins short story has the reader desiring to know what happens next.  I personally hope the author can create a new twist on the zombie story that give the reader a new look at an old and sometimes over used genres with his next short story.

Synopsis: * The First Zombies - Chapter One Of Dead Awakening ***
A viral pandemic has wiped out parts of the world at an alarming rate.
A group of college students who heard the news were held up in a dormitory, surrounded by the undead...zombies...
Not knowing what is happening and cut off from the world, they struggled to overcome their fear and confusion with only one goal in mind - STAY ALIVE!
Here's a tantalizing excerpt of the story:
"David lined up the zombie’s head in his sights.
He controlled his breathing, hoping to keep the gun’s sights from moving too much.
He was still, waiting for the perfect moment when the head would be fully visible, clear from the thick tangle of trees that lined the orchard.
The zombie lumbered towards his perch, unaware that in mere moments, its unlife would soon be ended.
Rotting skin crisscrossed against its pale visage as its lifeless eyes roamed the area.
Either due to scent or vision, its head swivelled towards David’s location.
Its mouth began opening, struggling to emit a moan.
David froze as he peered through the gun’s sights and saw the zombie look straight at him.
He saw the zombie attempt to moan. With a panicked curse, David fired, hoping to kill the zombie before its moan attracted any more of its kind.
The gun’s sights jerked as he fired a round. David closed his eyes in desperation.
He had missed...."
