Book Review - The Girl in the Glass - Susan Meissner

The Girl in the Glass: A Novel
Title:  The Girl in the Glass

Review:  I love the way this author can weave different time periods and lives together to create a beautiful story.  Her plots are multi-layered and interesting at each stage.  This story kept me turning the pages and the ending was worth the journey.

I love this look at the past and the present as important to our lives.  We are part of those that have come before us and love is what binds us all.  Love for each other in the good times and love for each other in the bad times.  But being a Christian publisher I was a bit lost that God was not mentioned more.

If you enjoy history brought to life in stories and people you will enjoy this author and this book.  I have a greater desire to visit Florence then I had before…someday I keep telling myself…when the kids are grown…maybe…I hope.  This is a story of hope and hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I would suggest her book, Sound Among the Trees, also.

Synopsis:  Renaissance is a word with hope infused in every letter.

Since she was a child, Meg has dreamed of taking a promised trip to Florence, Italy, and being able to finally step into the place captured in a picture at her grandmother’s house. But after her grandmother passes away and it falls to her less-than-reliable father to take her instead, Meg’s long-anticipated travel plans seem permanently on hold.

When her dad finally tells Meg to book the trip, she prays that the experience will heal the fissures left on her life by her parents’ divorce. But when Meg arrives in Florence, her father is nowhere to be found, leaving aspiring memoir-writer Sophia Borelli to introduce Meg to the rich beauty of the ancient city. Sofia claims to be one of the last surviving members of the Medici family and that a long-ago Medici princess, Nora Orsini, communicates with her from within the great masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance.

When Sophia, Meg, and Nora’s stories intersect, their lives will be indelibly changed as they each answer the question: What if renaissance isn’t just a word? What if that’s what happens when you dare to believe that what is isn’t what has to be?

Book Feature - Hating Heidi Foster - Jeffrey Blount

Hating Heidi Foster
Title:  Hating Heidi Foster

Author:  Jeffrey Blount

Synopsis:  Mae McBride and Heidi Foster were the very best of friends.  Tied at the hip from early elementary school, their relationship was the stuff of storybooks, legendary even, in the minds of their high school classmates.

Unshakable.

That is, until Mae's father died while saving Heidi's life.

When Mae finds out, she blames Heidi.  She blames her father for putting Heidi ahead of her. She blames her friends for taking Heidi’s side. She begins to unravel amid that blame and her uncontrollable and atypical anger.

At the same time Heidi is beset by guilt, falls into depression and stops eating properly; wasting away physically and emotionally while waiting for Mae to let her back into the friendship she misses so dearly.

Mae, consumed by her hatred of Heidi, the confusion regarding her father’s motives, the perceived desertion of her friends and her mother’s grief, loses more and more of herself.

What could possibly bring these two old friends back to each other?  A miracle?
Hating Heidi Foster is a young adult novel about the place of honor true friendships hold in our lives. It is about suffering and loss and the ethics of grief.  It is about a deep and painful conflict, the bright light of selflessness and sacrifice and the love that rights the ship and carries us safely to port.

From the author:    Hating Heidi Foster has a very personal beginning.  A motivation of the heart.  My daughter, Julia and her best friend Emily, had been friends since second grade.  The idea for the book came to me in the fall of their senior year of high school.  I was watching them among a group of friends, the two of them sharing a moment, talking and laughing with the intimacy of old friends.  While watching them, I thought about the fact that they would be graduating in a few months and going to college a thousand miles apart.  Four years later, they could be half a country or half a world apart. When life intruded, would they even have time to remember that they’d shared this particular moment?  Or all of the other moments over the years?  It saddened me to think that one day they might forget what their friendship meant.  I decided that I would write a novel as a tribute to that friendship and give it to them as a graduation present, a kind of memory box for the years to come.

Book Review - A Kingbury Collection: Three Novels in One - Karen Kingsbury

A Kingsbury Collection: Three Novels in One: Where Yesterday Lives, When Joy Came to Stay, On Every Side
Title:  A Kingsbury Collection: Three Novels in One: Where Yesterday Lives, When Joy Comes to Stay, and On Every Side.

Review:  First off I have to say that this book is huge, over 750 pages.  It is hard to hold while reading and the print is small.   I found looking at this book to be daunting.  How was I going to get though it and how was I going to hold it without wearing my arms and hands out.  Well it took me quite awhile and I have to say that the stories moved slowly and so putting the book down had equal amounts to do with arm and hand strain and boredom.

The writing is top notch, but the stories are sad and left me in a sour mood.  I really prefer happy endings with lots of wonderful things happening to the characters.  I realize that is not reality…but I read to escape reality not to relive some of the worse of it.  I think the ending was flat and lacked imagination.  I know God works miracles in my life and I see new ones everyday in the small mercies that occur, but.....to each his own.

Now I know lots of people loved this set of books so go out and give it a try yourself.

Sometimes things are not for me and sometimes I love things that others hate….to each its own.  This was not one of my favorite books or sets of stories and I wish I could get back the time I spent on this huge volume.

Synopsis: Three Page-Turning Novels in One Volume!

Where Yesterday Lives

Ellen Barrett is a Pulitzer prize-winning journalist with an uncertain marriage, a forgotten faith, and haunting memories of her picturesque hometown and the love she left behind. The eldest of five siblings, she longs for the time, long ago, when they were a happy family. Now Ellen’s beloved father is dead, and she returns to her childhood home to make peace–with the people who still live there, with the losses and changes that time has wrought, and with the future God has set before her.

When Joy Came to Stay

Maggie Stovall is one of the golden people. She has it all together...at least on the surface. Ben Stovall is a godly husband and successful attorney. He has no idea of the darkness about to overtake his life. Amanda Joy is a child of society–abused, broken, thrown away. But her trust in God is still alive. When Joy Came to Stay is the heart-wrenching story of one woman’s descent into the shadows of depression, her husband’s search for understanding, and a precious child’s unwavering faith.

On Every Side

Faith Evans is an up-and-coming newscaster, a woman of honor and integrity who must take a stand against the one man she never imagined would be her enemy. A beloved, hundred-year-old statue of Jesus stands in a small-town park–but some say it’s a clear violation of separation of church and state that must come down. Jordan Riley is a powerful attorney fighting for human rights and against God, but still reckoning with bitter boyhood losses. Amid political intrigue, social injustice, and personal conflicts, will love be enough when the battle rages on every side?

Book Feature - Heavenly Signs - Mel Gable

Heavenly Signs: Grand Design for Christ's Return
Title: Heavenly Signs: Grand Design for Christ's Return
Author:  Mel Gable

Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 978-1449769734
Published: October 2012
Pages: 124

Synopsis:  Is the end of the world coming? What signs will be apparent before the end of time? Find out in the new book, Heavenly Signs: Grand Design for Christ's Return.

Those who have wondered about creation and if the Bible is truly from God will definitely get a clear answer to both questions by reading this book.

God created the heavens for greater significance than separating the day from the night. It was created to display “Heavenly Signs.” The heavens reveal to mankind the truth about the End Times and the timing of events.

It is astonishing to find that God’s Word aligns perfectly with the heavenly signs that have been shown in this book. Signs were placed in the heavens by God Himself and the motion of heavenly bodies was determined at the time of creation by God. This, without a doubt, proves there must be an Almighty God who has had a plan for this earth, since the beginning of time.

Heavenly Signs: Grand Design for Christ's Return opens with the first Trumpet Judgment on the earth. It is followed by the desolation of the Temple in Jerusalem. Next is the angels sequentially blowing the trumpets of judgment and concluding with the Return of Christ, the renewing of the earth and His Millennial Reign.

Book Review - Pirate Latitudes - Michael Crichton

Title: Pirate Latitudes

Review: I realize this book is from a few years ago, but I like this author and so I decided to read it. As I read this book I could feel the warm tropical breezes, feel the humid sun in the sky and yet it was cold here in Minnesota at the time. I loved the way the author wrapped you up tight in his little world and kept you there until the end. This is not one of his bests, I think his best was Timeline, but this is a good book that is faced paced and exciting to read.

This book reminded me of the movie Pirates of the Caribbean a bit and the characters were rich and full of life. I would suggest this book to anyone who needs a good escape, especially on a cold winter’s night.

Why I Read It: I’ve read most of the books from this author, so why not this one?

Synopsis: The Caribbean, 1665. Port Royal, Jamaica is a cutthroat town of taverns, grog shops, and bawdy houses. For Captain Charles Hunter, there’s a living to be made, and gold in Spanish hands is gold for the taking.

Word in port is that the galleon El Trinidad is awaiting repairs in a nearby, heavily fortified, harbor. Hunter assembles a crew of ruffians to infiltrate the enemy island and commandeer El Trinidad, along with its fortune in gold. The raid is as perilous as the bloodiest tales of island legend and Hunter will lose more than one man before he even sets foot on foreign shores, where dense jungle and the firepower of Spanish infantry stand between him and the treasure . . .

With all the suspense that readers have come to expect from one of the best-loved authors of all time, Pirate Latitudes is an irresistible adventure of swashbuckling pirates in the New World, a classic story of treasure and betrayal.

Book Review - Mists of Adriana - Roger Woodbury

The Mists of Adriana
Title:     Mists of Adriana

Author:  Roger Woodbury

Review: The story opens with the hero changing the tire of Adriana Burrows, a beautiful and multi-talented young lawyer.  She is driving a Porsche as does our hero and it is here that the two find a mutual attraction to each other and to each other’s cars.  As the story takes place Adriana becomes a mystery that our hero, she calls “Lancelot” decides he would really like to know more about.  They become involved with each other to the point that they fall in love.  One little hitch occurs though, she is still married to the head of a drug cartel in South America and has a young son, or so she tells him. As their time together goes on he learns more of her situation and wants to help her find a way out of it, what he doesn't know is that this all goes back to her job as a lawyer, for someone other than who he believes she working for.    Hint the DEA is involved in the story along with the CIA which adds a lot of color to the whole thing.

The story is well written though I did feel that the author went into a bit too much detail in some places that did not add anything to the story.

I thought it would be an intrigue but it was much more of a romance with the intrigue in the back ground until near the end, which gives an interesting twist on the story.

I like the book because the language was minimal and the sex stopped at the bedroom door which is a nice change of pace from most books of this type!

I give this book a 3-4 leaning more to the four side of it.

Thanks Eileen for this review.

Synopsis:   This is a mystery/thriller set on the coast of Maine. The principal character/narrator is a man entering his middle years. An army officer in Vietnam, upon returning form his first tour he learned his wife had died unexpectedly.  His response was to go back to Vietnam where he tried to get dead for the next two years.  Finally, he was sent home by a commanding officer who felt he had more worth alive than dying a mourning death.
He "retired" to a small house on the Maine coast where he became a writer and photographer.  His principal enjoyment comes from early morning drives around Mt. Desert Island, home to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.  It is on one of these early morning drives that he stops to help a fellow motorist stranded with car trouble.  It is then he meets the semi-mysterious Adriana Barrows.
An early summer/early autumn relationship begins to develop as he learns more and more about Adriana's past.  And soon he learns again one of the lessons he learned in combat in Vietnam:  when things seem too good to be true, they often are.  To be sure, Adriana is a strong, independent woman.  A linguist with a background in the war on drugs and a fascination for him that he never expected to find.

Author Biography:  Roger M. Woodbury is a man who says his life has been "full and variable." "Full because of the wide range of experiences I have had," he says, "And variable because I have never wanted to stay nailed to one desk for a very long time. I have loved a woman (well, several actually); I have had my war (one was enough), and I have needed to reinvent my professional self many times. But always there was the writing, whether by pen, keyboard, carpenter's pencil, or something else. The writing has been the key to my ventures, experiments, and experiences. Now, I find myself of a 'certain age'. The Air Force had taken away my keys to their newest jet fighter; my calls to NASA's astronaut recruiter went unanswered and I am a bit too broad to fit in a Formula One race car. But I find I am not yet done and I will continue writing about my adventures, some fiction and some not, for the rest of my time. I hope the readers will enjoy the adventures with me."

Book Review - Born to Darkness - Suzanne Brockmann

Born To Darkness (Fighting Destiny, #1)
Title:     Born To Darkness

Author:  Suzanne Brockmann

Review: I have read this author in the past…her Trouble Shooters Series especially.  I enjoyed her books and so decided to give this new series a try.  The size of the book was a bit daunting at first and the story built slowly….but WOW…it took off and I really enjoyed the way the tale unraveled.

This is set in the future and some of the population has more use of their brain then others…also there are new illegal drugs available that will give you these new abilities and yet hook you all at the same time.  There is lots of romance and sex…along with thrilling moments and kept me on the edge of my seat.

I think this will be a great series…it took a bit of the first book to set up the time, characters and story line…the next I think will start with a bang and grab me from the first line.

Synopsis:   As the New York Times bestselling author of the Troubleshooters series and a “superstar of romantic suspense” (USA Today), Suzanne Brockmann has an acclaimed history of taking readers’ breath away with her novels of hot passion and high adventure. Now she takes her talent for sexy, action-packed storytelling in a thrilling new direction: forward—into a future, both fantastic and frightening, that only the brilliant Brockmann could envision.
Dishonorably discharged, former Navy SEAL Shane Laughlin is down to his last ten bucks when he finally finds work as a test subject at the Obermeyer Institute, a little-known and believed-to-be-fringe scientific research facility. When he enters the OI compound, he is plunged into a strange world where seemingly mild-mannered scientists—including women half his size—can kick his highly skilled ass.
Shane soon discovers that there are certain individuals who possess the unique ability to access untapped regions of the brain with extraordinary results—including telekinesis, super strength, and reversal of the aging process. Known as “Greater-Thans,” this rare breed is recruited by OI, where they are rigorously trained using ancient techniques to cultivate their powers and wield them responsibly.
But in the depths of America’s second Great Depression, where the divide between the haves and the have-nots has grown even wider, those who are rich—and reckless—enough have a quick, seductive alternative: Destiny, a highly addictive designer drug that can make anyone a Greater-Than, with the power of eternal youth. The sinister cartel known as The Organization has begun mass-producing Destiny, and the demand is epidemic. But few realize the drug’s true danger, and fewer still know the dirty secret of Destiny’s crucial ingredient.
Michelle “Mac” Mackenzie knows the ugly truth. And as one of the Obermeyer Institute’s crack team of operatives, she’s determined to end the scourge of Destiny. But her kick-ass attitude gets knocked for a loop when she finds that one of the new test subjects is none other than Shane, the same smoldering stranger who just rocked her world in a one-night stand. Although Shane isn’t a Greater-Than like Mac, as an ex-SEAL, he’s got talents of his own. But Mac’s got powerful reasons to keep her distance from him—and reasons that are just as strong to want him close. She’s used to risking her life, but now, in the midst of the ultimate war on drugs, she must face sacrificing her heart.

Book Feature - The Keeper of Dawn - JB Hickman

The Keeper of Dawn
Title: The Keeper of Dawn

Author: J.B. Hickman

Synopsis: 15-year-old Jacob Hawthorne comes from a wounded past. With a self-absorbed mother, an estranged father, and an older brother on the other side of the world, only the unlikely friendship with his grandfather can lure Jacob back home. But home feels like a distant memory from the shore of Raker Island, the isolated campus of one of the Northeast’s elite prep schools.

As the surrogate bonds of a cloistered all-boys school fall into place, Jacob finds himself among other sons of privilege who suffer the same affliction—growing up in their fathers’ shadow. The old adage—the sons of great men rarely attain greatness—haunts these boys as they try to redefine themselves in the wake of lives left behind on the mainland. In fact, Jacob and his friends get dubbed “the Headliners” when their fathers make the headlines on the same day. Among them is Chris Forsythe, the rebellious son of a high-profile politician whose helicopter arrival sparks jealousy among the school’s upperclassmen.

Wellington Academy has been selected to host that fall’s senatorial debate, and Chris’ father is one of the candidates. Chris convinces Jacob—who is among the students selected to question the candidates on live television—to expose his father for embezzling money to finance his reelection campaign. Only Mr. O’Leary, Wellington’s inquisitive history teacher, stands in the way of Chris’ influence over Jacob. He alone can stop the inevitable head-on father-son collision that Chris is guiding Jacob toward. But when tragedy strikes, Jacob is forced to journey into the past to reclaim a well-guarded family secret.

Praise for The Keeper of Dawn

Kathryn Cunningham - Amazon Top 500 Reviewer Vine Voice

Parts of this novel are reminiscent of 'A Separate Peace' (also about boys facing truths at a prep school). But I was also reminded of the 2002 film 'The Emperor's Club', which has a lot to say about fathers and sons (Jake's friend Chris is very much like that film's Sedgewick Bell, whose pranks were always more memorable than his scholastic achievement). Hickman's novel, however, surpasses both of these works in profound ways. I think I will remember Jake Hawthorne forever.

Tracy Terry - Petty Witter Blog Site - U.K.

A well written, insightful and emotionally charged debut novel, somehow all the more remarkable for, almost without exception, its characters are all male. This is a book about people and relationships, though in many ways I would also describe it as a mystery. Even though something momentous was hinted at from the beginning, the reader is kept in suspense as to just what this might be until the end.

Kathi Holmes, Author

This is not my type of book. I like murder mysteries and courtroom dramas. But once I started reading 'The Keeper of Dawn', each chapter captured my attention until I couldn't put it down. I'm glad I did because the ending is very revealing. I believe this is just the beginning of a long writing career for Hickman.
