Book Review: Overwhelming Force (Omega Sector Critical Response #5) By Janie Crouch

Overwhelming Force (Omega Sector: Critical Response #5)
Title: Overwhelming Force (Omega Sector Critical Response #5)

Author: Janie Crouch

Stars: 4 1\2 out of 5

Review:
I can honestly say I never expect much from Harlequin Romance books. Just a quick easy read with every little substance.
This book not only had substance but a message too. The characters are well developed with a back story that gives readers hope for second chance romances in the real world along with humorous moments.
This is the first book in this series as well as by the author Janie Crouch and I plan to go back to read more by this author.
There is no surprise why the killer is killing and the readers will be given pcies why it is happening but if you pay attention it doesn't take long to figure out why. The story has a great build taking its time making sure you understand each of the characters without making it borning or slowling down the story.
The message is all about how people normal person are treated in the media when the spot light hits them. We tear about their lives, their body types and education. Women are the worst. We tear each other apart treating each other less than equals just to make ourselves feel better.
We demand to be treated as equals in the world but we can't treat each other as equals. How can we expect men to treat us as equals when we can't treat another woman as an equal.
The only problem I had was in the final as my son would call it boss battle. I had to read it several times to understand what was happening. That is why it is a 4 1\2 instead of a 5. I think it could have been explain better to keep the readre from getting confused.

Book Review The Dollmaker (The Forgotten Files, #2) Mary Burton

The Dollmaker (The Forgotten Files, #2)
Title: The Dollmaker

Author: Mary Burton

Stars: 5 out of 5

Review:

This is the first book I have read by Mary Burton. I will be picking up more of her books in the near future.
The Dollmaker is one of the few books I have read that had me guessing who the killer until the reader finds out. The Dollmaker is intriguing, captivating and suspenseful book I have read in a long time. The boo has a slow build pulling the readers right in keeping them hooked.

Dr. Tessa McGowan and Dakota Sharp’s are very like able characters. I would have loved more of a back story to understand them better. They each had a way of making you trust them as Mary Burton told the story. I couldn't put this book down and I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Twist, Turns, suspense that will keep reader reading and wanting more.
Advance Copy from Netgalley

Synopsis:
Dr. Tessa McGowan had never seen anything quite like it. But the mutilated bodies on her exam table tell a stunningly macabre tale: someone with a twisted mind is kidnapping women and altering their faces to resemble real, life-size dolls. Twelve years ago an unspeakable tragedy destroyed Dakota Sharp’s world. Haunted by the ghosts of his past, he’s devoted himself to capturing killers. His only regret is that it cost him Tessa. Now, as the Dollmaker case brings them together—and raises his suspicions that he’s crossed paths with this deranged psychopath before—they may just have their second chance. But it seems Dakota’s not the only one who wants to make Tessa his own…

About The Author:
Mary Burton
Mary Burton loves writing suspense, researching forensic and law enforcement procedure, baking, books, and tiny dachshunds. Not necessarily in that order.

She also enjoys hunting down serial killers, which she does in her New York Times and USA Today bestselling novels of suspense and romance. She’s tracked them down in stories set in her hometown of Richmond, Alexandria, Austin and Nashville that have been praised by readers and reviewers. Her work has been compared to that of James Patterson*, Lisa Gardner** and Lisa Jackson***.

Research is a favorite part of Mary’s work day. She never tires of learning more about police work, evidence collection and analysis, and doesn’t hesitate to take a hands-on approach, whether it means interviews with those working in the field, forensic seminars or lessons at the firing range.

A Richmond native, Mary has lived there for most of her life. She is a graduate of Virginia's Hollins University and worked in marketing before she began writing full time. Her first book was published in 2000 and now she’s the author of thirty-one novels and five novellas, including her contemporary women’s fiction written as Mary Ellen Taylor.

Her new book, The Dollmaker is the second of her The Forgotten Files novels, which began with The Shark. The third, The Hangman, will be published in early May 2017. Her recent bestsellers, the popular Morgan Family novels Vulnerable, I’ll Never Let You Go, Be Afraid and Cover Your Eyes, feature Nashville's preeminent law enforcement family.

When not traveling for research or visiting with readers at bookstores, book festivals and conferences, Mary is very much a homebody. She and her husband spend time alternately enjoying and lamenting their newly empty nest and spoiling their four legged babies Buddy, Bella and Tiki.

Motherhood I can Break it Or I can Fix it it will still cost the same

Image result for Too much laundry
The other day my washer stopped working and if you are a parent and you have more than one kid well its the most terrifying thing in the world. Not to mention it happened at the beginning of cold and flu season.
Image result for Broken Washing machine
I called Whirlpool and nothing against them they were great.  Gave me tons of ideas before suggesting I set up a service call.  The person on the other end said "I will warn you if it what I think it might be it will cast between 300-600$ to fix. You can buy the same Machine for $399. Maybe cheaper at the outlet."
I thanked the person and stared at my washer. 300-600$ to fix my 8 year old washer.  All I kept thinking was well there goes my Christmas again to appliances.

When did life become so much easier if we just throw it out than have it fixed?

I took the mans advice and I started to hunt for what I thought was wrong with my machine.  I knew that the machine wasn't what I call mixing the clothing no matter what the bright flashing light kept saying (WHICH WAS SD too man suds.)

I pulled up a YouTube video on who to take part the agitator of my washing machine.

I LOVE YOUTUBE!

I looked down and thought I have two options I can break it and buy a new machine or I can fix it and save us 300-600$.

2 hours the first day just trying to make sure I understood everything that needed to be done while my 3 year old hung on my legs.

The next day I spent another two hours pulled apart the agitator.  I ended up needing help from my husband because my shoulders are bad and I couldn't get the nuts to let go. Once we got it off oh my gosh we both almost threw up!  CLEAN YOUR WASHERS!! Its so gross 8 years of mud, dirt and everything else on your clothing builds up.  Once it was clean we put it back together hoping it was that simple of a fix.  NOPE!

We took it apart again and found the piece in the video suggest and it was warn out.  it was an 18$ dollar part that was going to cost us 300$ to get fixed.  A week later the part arrived and we fixed the machine.  At first it gave up the SD flashing lights.  I put my hand over my wash and prayed.  Yup I prayed to God to please tell me how to make the machine work because my axnity was so high and i needed a win.  I had two sickie in my house with strep I needed a win.
I follow the instruction once again to clean out the machine and it worked.  I yes I think God helped me if you were wondering.
Image result for broken sewing machine
All while this was going on I have a sewing machine that hasn't worked in a year. I was told because I hadn't had it cleaned and turned in 13 years it would cost about 125$. I can buy a really nice new one at that price. I didn't want to go hunting for a new machine.  I just wanted to fix mine.  So I tried watching YouTube videos but not one made since.  I started to take it apart making sure I had everything where I could reach it.  Again my 3 year old wanted to sit on my lap but after he touch the needle one to many time he decided he was done and went off to play. 4 hours later my machine started to work once again.  It was a simple fix and I figure out how to fix the tension too.  I couldn't believe it!  I was so proud of myself!  I used to sew clothing as a kid and make my summer shorts, skirts and tee shirts to run around in. I wanted to try again.
My mother in law passed away a few years ago before she got sick she had been teaching me how to sew again.  She bought me everything I needed but did she know she bought me what I needed to fix my machine myself? The oils, small screw drivers, and her laugh. I could hear her laugh as I would have to take apart the same area once again to fix the tension.  She was with me.  Now I just pray she will be with me when I try to sew a skirt.

Lesson for parents who stay at home or work work.  If you have time Fix it yourself it will make you feel amazing that you can accomplish something and it will same you a ton of money.

Go out a fix what you can God gave you a beautiful brain use it!

Book Review Maggie Dove's Detective Agency by Susan Breen

Maggie Dove's Detective Agency

Title: Maggie Dove's Detective Agency

Author: Susan Breen

Stars: 3 1\2 out of 5

Review:
A well written and thought out story-line with a colorful cast of characters. The main character appears to be a very sincere individual who is always trying to do what is correct and right. If you enjoy very light reading mysteries this would be an ideal book for you. I felt a more in depth description and background for the characters would have been very helpful ln fully understanding the story-line.
I have rated this book at 3.5 stars.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.
Thank you Frank for your Reviews

Synopsis:
As Susan Breen’s compelling cozy mystery series continues, Maggie Dove’s budding detective agency has given her a new lease on life. Only one thing stands in the way of success: her clients—or lack of them.

After catching the killer who shook her small Hudson River town, former Sunday School teacher Maggie Dove stumbled onto an exciting new career and found a way to take her mind off her own tragic past. Now, despite her best efforts to promote the agency, Maggie can’t seem to land any new cases—until Racine Stern, one of the village’s wealthiest residents, offers her a thousand dollars to convince her “evil” sister, Domino, to stay out of town.

While Maggie’s business partner thinks she’s crazy for turning down a potential client, she doesn’t want her agency to get a reputation for accommodating bizarre requests. However, Maggie is soon caught up in the family drama anyway. Racine may fear for her life—and her inheritance—but it’s Domino who takes the fall when she plunges to her death from a tower at Stern Manor. Was it an accident or something more sinister? Maggie’s investigation will test her faith—and her ability to survive.

Book Review Blind Retribution by K.T. Roberts

Blind Retribution
Title: Blind Retribution

Author: K.T. Roberts

Stars: 2 out of 5

Review:

Blind Retribution couldn't seem to figure out what type of book it wanted to be. Crime, Cop book, Romantic suspense (I didn't read anything suspenseful) Mystery with slight romance where the leads are not really connected. I just couldn't connect with this book and struggled with Max and Cory.

K.T. Roberts wrote Cory and Max as if the characters were feeling this unbelievable connection but while I read the book I didn't get that feeling. Instead it felt disconnected at times and awkward at best.
Cory talks without thinking first sweet words of romance and Max being hard core cop seem to eat up the words but than question them the next. It just felt disconnected at the best of times.

I found myself speed reading the last 55% of the book just wanting to figure out the killer hoping maybe there would be a last minute twist but instead its is what the reader expected.

The entire story felt disconnected, lack of emotions and boring at times. I finished the book after 3 days of struggling though it.

Sex and Violence fit the book are not graphic in fact I would call it simple, fast and done.

Advance Copy from netgalley for my honest thoughts.

Synopsis:

It should have been an open-and-shut case. When a car bomb explodes, taking with it the wife of a prominent heart surgeon, NYPD detective Maxine Turner is sure she has arrested the right suspect—until Cory Rossini, a private investigator, begins muddying the waters. Max already has enough to deal with: her longtime partner is retiring, her latest case is suddenly anything but simple, and she now has a troubling attraction to a man who is proving to be annoyingly persistent.

Having taken on the task of proving his friend’s innocence, Cory isn’t about to drop the ball—no matter how distractingly beautiful he finds the detective assigned to the investigation. When his sleuthing turns up other homicides connected to the cardiology department, including a young woman whose throat has been slit, he convinces Max that they should work together. And as they delve further into the vicious murders, they search for the one lead that will steer them straight to a killer

ThrowBack Thursday Tess Masterson Will Go To Prom By Emily Franklin and Brenda Halpin

Book Review - Tess Masterson Will Go to Prom - Emily Franklin and Brenda Halpin

Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom
Title:  Tessa Masterson Will Go to Prom

Review:  I picked this up at my local library without reading the back.  When I started reading I realized what the book was about and thought, ‘OK I’ll give it a few more pages.’  Well I’m glad I did.  This book will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you think about how you treat people who are not the same as you are.  I really enjoyed this book and I think you will also.

Who said that we all have to be the same to get along?  I hope no one because it isn’t possible for one thing and it would be extremely boring if it was.  I like the difference in people it keeps things changing and it keeps me thinking.  I am a every Sunday church going Christian and I have to say that people who use Jesus Christ as  reason to hate and discriminate against others(for any reason under the sun) do not understand Christianity at all.  Christ taught of love and non-judgment, he taught of peace and goodwill to all.  He never taught of hate and discrimination, he never taught of bombing abortion clinics,  or violent protests again homosexuals,  Christ taught of patience, long-suffering, charity and most of all love.  Not just love for those that are like us and easy to love, but for all people.  Christianity is about love, not hate…..never hate.

This book made me really think about the way I treat those who are different from me….those who are from a different race, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, intelligence, value system, religion, and I have to say that I did not  enjoy what I saw in myself.  Work is needed on my part to be a true Christian and to truly follow Christ.  Christ is love, don’t mix that up with right or wrong…..Love is all that matters in this world.

The authors may not have intended for this to be the theme of their work, but to me I had a hard time seeing anything else.  Thank you for this book and the feelings it brought up in my heart.

Quick Review: 41/2  stars (out of 5)

Why I Read It:  I saw this on the new book shelf at the library and it looked interesting.

Synopsis: Lucas and Tessa’s friendship is the stuff of legend in their small Midwestern town. So it’s no surprise when Lucas finally realizes his feelings for Tessa are more than friendship and he asks her to prom. What no one expected, especially Lucas, was for Tessa to come out as a lesbian instead of accepting his heartfelt invitation. Humiliated and confused, Lucas also feels betrayed that his best friend kept such an important secret from him.

What’s worse is Tessa’s decision to wear a tastefully tailored tuxedo to escort her female crush, sparking a firestorm of controversy. Lucas must decide if he should stand on the sidelines or if he should stand by his friend to make sure that Tessa Masterson will go to prom.

Emily Franklin and Brendan Halpin tackle both sides of a ripped-from-the headlines story to show that true friendship will triumph after all.

Author Biography:Brenda Halpin -  I grew up in Cincinnati, went to college in Philadelphia, and also lived in Taipei and Edinburgh along the way. I've lived in Boston since 1991.

I became a professional writer in 2000, writing about my late wife Kirsten's breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Kirsten died in 2003, leaving me and our daughter Rowen. I married Suzanne in 2005 and got her kids Casey and Kylie in the deal too. Bargain! Suzanne and I live with our three kids and dog in the shadow of Franklin Park in Jamaica Plain, best neighborhood on earth.
Emily Franklin

Growing up, Emily Franklin wanted to be “a singing, tap-dancing doctor who writes books.”

Having learned early on that she has little to no dancing ability, she left the tap world behind, studied at Oxford University, and received an undergraduate degree concentrating in writing and neuroscience from Sarah Lawrence College. Though she gave serious thought to a career in medicine, eventually that career followed her dancing dreams.

After extensive travel, some “character-building” relationships, and a stint as a chef, Emily went back to school at Dartmouth where she skied (or fished, depending on the season) daily, wrote a few screenplays, and earned her Master’s Degree in writing and media studies.

While editing medical texts and dreaming about writing a novel, Emily went to Martha’s Vineyard on a whim and met her future husband who is, of course, a doctor. And a pianist. He plays. They sing. They get married. He finishes medical school, they have a child, she writes a novel. Emily’s dreams are realized. She writes books.

Emily Franklin is the author of two adult novels, The Girls' Almanac and Liner Notes and more than a dozen books for young adults including the critically-acclaimed seven book fiction series for teens, The Principles of Love. Other young adult books include The Other Half of Me the Chalet Girls series, and At Face Value, a retelling of Cyrano de Bergerac (coming in September 2008).

She edited the anthologies It's a Wonderful Lie: 26 Truths about Life in Your Twenties and How to Spell Chanukah: 18 Writers Celebrate 8 Nights of Lights. She is co-editor of Before: Short Stories about Pregnancy from Our Top Writers.

Her book of essays and recipes, Too Many Cooks: Kitchen Adventures with 1 Mom, 4 Kids, 102 New Recipes ~ A Memoir of Tasting, Testing, and Discovery in the Kitchen will be published by Hyperion.

Emily’s work has appeared in The Boston Globe and the Mississippi Review as well as in many anthologies including Don't You Forget About Me: Contemporary Writers on the Films of John Hughes, When I Was a Loser: True Stories of (Barely) Surviving High School by Today's Top Writers, and Because I Love Her: 34 Women Writers on the Mother-Daughter Bond. Emily writes regularly about food and parenting for national magazines and newspapers. She travels, teaches writing seminars, and speaks on panels, but does not tap dance. Emily Franklin lives outside of Boston with her husband and their four young children.

Book Review Prodigal Parish by Leo F. White

Prodigal Parish

Title: Prodigal Parish

Author: Leo F. White

Stars: 5 out of 5

Review:
Have you ever read a synopsis of a book and thought I might like this story but were not really sure? That was my feelings when I decided to read this book. Well, I want to tell you I was wrong and if I had not read this book I would have missed out on a fantastic story. I was drawn in from the first chapter until the last page. It has drama, happiness, and sadness all rolled up in a neat bundle. I can only hope to see another book with the continuation of Father Wesley's life and career in the Catholic Church.
I have rated this book at five stars. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good book.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review.
Thank you Frank for your reviews.

Synopsis:
Father Paul Wesley saw his epiphany and embraced it. The demons and debauchery that had blackened his soul and threatened to be his damnation had been dispatched. A life without meaning now had purpose. But for every ounce of good that thrives; there is an ounce of evil.

The penance Father Wesley is asked to pay for his sins of the past comes at a price. The allegiance and dedication he has sworn to the Church and the men who run it comes into play. He is recruited to ease the conscience of one while playing nursemaid to the greed of another.
The edict rendered, Father Wesley returns to the parish of his youth. But, unbeknownst to his superiors, he does so as his own man, not as the devious manipulator he has been asked to portray.

About The Author:
Leo F. White
A fixture on the Boston television scene as a graphics producer and feature writer on Boston Red Sox, Bruins and Celtics telecasts for the past thirty years, Leo White came upon a writing career out of necessity rather than as an avocation. However, what started as a necessary endeavor morphed itself into a burning passion with atypical results for someone in his field.
In addition to his television work White was also employed as a producer at the fabled Fleetwood Recording Studio; back in the day when vinyl ruled while videotape recording was in its infancy and the digital industry was something talked about in futuristic terms. During his ten year tenure at Fleetwood, Leo served as producer for many of their renowned sports recordings and it was during this time that his writing talent came to the forefront as he was asked to also serve in the capacity of copy editor before assuming the role of lead writer. Out of necessity was born a passion and a creativity that seemed boundless.
Forsaking the staid journalistic approach of television reporting, Leo began to use a storytelling mode as he expanded his endeavors from the Fleetwood studio to the world of Boston television. Legendary sportscaster Ken Coleman, and later Sean McDonough, picked up on his ability to relate a story and started pushing him in a different direction. But it wasn’t until the challenge of a dear friend was made did he decide to give the storytelling thing a chance. And the challenge was a daring one: write a book --- a novel --- that did not take place in the world of athletics.
Said challenge was accepted and met. He produced a work called Eternal Damnation; a gender thriller played out on a global stage with the central protagonists being a male president and a female vice president of the United States. Not looking to embark on a new career, White allowed his peers and close friends to be the judges of his work and they found it to be enjoyable reading. Then, from the friend who had issued the challenge, came a request. Could he write a story that might serve as her self-emancipation? A story line was suggested and Leo took it from there and thus came the work which proved to be a labor of love entitled Next to Never.
Soon to follow was the tome Prodigal Parish. Then, after several years of literary inactivity, Leo found himself in a weekly and intense conversation with a pair of waitress friends who seemed to delight in revealing their unattainable fantasies, which they believed would make a good book. Each week he wrote a chapter to share with them and they were soon urging him to publish what was to become known as Dirty Girl.
Aware of the uphill struggle trying to publish a book encompassed he agreed to give it a try but he was not intent on expending the diligent work and sweat that might be needed to reach a publishing goal. That is until another challenge came his way in the form of guidelines. Dirty Girl was good enough to be published but only after certain subjects had been removed or altered because of sensitivity issues a certain readership might find offensive, he was told. Like the Lost Generation writers who came before him White decided that substance took preference over immediate capital gains and so the StreetsofPaine.com site was developed so his readership could enjoy his work and he was free to write without one arm tied behind his back.

Review:

I received this book for my honest opinion

This is a wonderful reference book for those who are away from home for the first time. Heck even I am using this as a reference book and I am a stay at home mom who has been cooking for a family of six. (2 adults 4 pickie eating kids)
The other day I was looking at the package of hot dog sitting in the frig unopened and I was wondering how long can they be like that? Will they go bad if I don't open them? If they are opened how long to I have before they go bad? I realized I had no idea. All I knew was that hot dogs needed to boil or be cooked to 165 degrees before eating.
I grabbed the book and quickly looked it up and found what I was looking for. I found what I had been questioning about lunch meats as well. I will be better able to prepare family lunches and dinners know what is still good and what has gone bad. It will save us lots of money because I don't be throwing away as much food thinking it has gone bad.
No saying my kids won't still wait food because they will but I don't.

I plan on giving this book away to all my friends who kids are graduating from college, new parents and newlyweds.
I am so happy I was able to review this awesome reference guide to food prep, keeping my kitchen clean and knowing if my kids get sick it wasn't my kitchen for food fault if I follow this guide.

About The Authors:
Joe Kivett
JOE KIVETT, CO-AUTHOR
After years of calling his mother each time he had a question related to food safety or quality, Joe began researching the answers for himself. His original mission was to create a chart that outlined how long food products last. While conducting his research, Joe discovered a wealth of food-safety and food-quality information that complemented his food-longevity chart, which led to the creation of this simple guide, written specifically for the consumer.

Before becoming a published author, Kivett worked at Walt Disney Entertainment for 16 years, where he produced stage shows and special events. In 1991, Kivett founded his own production company, Kivett Productions, which organizes stadium card stunts worldwide.

Kivett received a BA in speech communications and a BS in broadcast journalism from the University of Florida, and lives in downtown Orlando with his wife and daughter. They enjoy cycling, hiking and, of course, grocery shopping together.

DR. MARK TAMPLIN, CO-AUTHOR

Dr. Tamplin holds a PhD in Medical Sciences, specializing in Microbiology & Immunology. Over a 30-year international career working as a university researcher and advisor to government agencies, his research has explored how pathogens exist in the environment and food, and then how they cause disease in humans. Tamplin’s work has been published in over 110 scientific articles and a dozen books. With his expertise in food safety and enthusiasm to educate, becoming co-author of The Food Safety Book was a natural fit.

He has been appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to serve on the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods. Early in 2016, Dr. Tamplin blended his extensive knowledge of science with adventure in Phage, the first novel in his science thriller trilogy.
Dr. Tamplin grew up in West Virginia and now splits his time between Atlanta and Australia. For more information about Dr. Tamplin, visit his website marktamplin.com.

DR. GERALD J. KIVETT, CONTRIBUTING AUTHOR
After earning his Wings of Gold with the U.S. Navy flight program in 1966, Dr. Kivett flew with Patrol Squadron Five in Jacksonville, FL, the fourth oldest squadron in the U.S. Navy. Discovering a passion for teaching and an interest in the medical field, Dr. Kivett returned to school and received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida. Following six years of employment at two Naval Hospitals, he left active duty in the Navy and started his private practice in Orlando in 1984.

Dr. Kivett eventually retired with the rank of Captain after 24 years of service. Educating his patients on a healthy lifestyle is an important aspect of his practice. Having seen a great number of food poisoning cases that could have been avoided with basic proper food safety knowledge, Dr. Kivett was pleased to write the chapter on foodborne illness in his son’s first published book, THE FOOD SAFETY BOOK. Dr. Kivett continues to stamp out disease as a family practice doctor in Orlando today.
