Review – Sedona Rouge (Sedona, AZ)

When it came to celebrating our anniversary, I wanted to take Heidi someplace special, but familiar. So when the Sedona Rouge popped up on a hotel list, it stayed on my radar despite it being on the higher end of the price spectrum. We stayed at the Rouge before approximately 10 years prior and had fond memories.

After eliminating various creek-side cabins (Most boasted about no TV, no wi-fi, and no cell signal. How are we supposed to binge on Netflix and old episodes of COPS in our robes?) from the idea pool, I decided to go again to the Rouge. I opted for the spa suite, which was also the type of room we had a decade prior. It was pricey, but it was a special occasion so I felt it was justified.

While we, overall, had a pleasurable experience again at the Rouge, there were a few things we felt were worth noting that made it less than perfect. However, as they teach you when you work in sales: start with the good, then the bad doesn’t sound so harsh.

The location was great. Far enough from the main thoroughfare of Sedona so that the traffic was minimal but close enough to get to some of the local fare. (The famous omelette joint, The Coffee Pot, is around 50 yards away.) To go along with the location, the neighborhood is quiet as a church mouse. We checked in to our room, cranked the AC down, and left for the pool. At the pool, other than one other couple smooching, there were no sounds coming from the street, other rooms, or… anything really. We have four little children, so the silence was a new thing for us.

The food delivered by room service was delicious and not nearly as expensive as we expected for the quality. We had a dinner delivered as well as a lunch during our stay and both of us commented on how great the flavor and preparation of the food was. Top notch.

The bed was superbly comfortable and down pillows were provided, though we called to the front desk to get some synthetics as the down wasn’t kind to Heidi’s allergies. The request for pillows was cheerfully fulfilled as was the requests for ice and a technician to work on our AC unit.

Which leads into one of the not-so-great things about our stay at the Sedona Rouge: the AC unit. It was a compact Samsung unit installed on the center wall that connected the bathroom to the main room, but it was not adequate for the room. We had expected the room to be chilly when we came back from the pool, but it was mildly cool and muggy. An hour later it was still going on high, (We lowered the thermostat as down to as low as it would go.) so that’s when we called the front desk. A tech came out, removed the cover, cleaned the filters, and verified the temperature, but still, the room would not cool down. They brought a box fan down for us, but in the end, we discovered that if you remove the cover completely, the AC unit chills the room nicely.

Another small complaint we had was with the timeliness of the room service. The first time we ordered our food, we received a call about 30-45 minutes after our initial call, asking if we still wanted the food. When we told them yes, they delivered it within 20 minutes, but by then we were starving. They didn’t offer any kind of discount on the food and also still included the stated 20% gratuity and $1.50 service fee. Like I said before, the food was great, we just expected a little consideration for the length of time it took to deliver it to us. Overall it was a small thing, but still worth noting.

The pool facility was nice and clean, if a little small, and within 50 feet of our spa room, so little to complain about there.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Sedona Rouge, despite there being a few unfortunate hiccups during our stay. The staff was accommodating and friendly, the food was great, and we celebreated a great anniversary at the place.  4/5 stars
