Title: White Lies
Review: White Lies is
about the little lies that can destroy our lives when we are unwilling to tell
the truth to impress others. Katrina
Burton is starting a new job teaching English in the small town of Leavenworth,
Washington. As she is driving into town she comes across a hitchhiker and
decides to be a Good Samaritan. She soon finds out that sometimes being nice
isn't always good. Katrina decides to
throw the hitchhiker out of her car but does it with a little white lie which
comes to haunt her the next day and throughout the rest of the book.
Jeremy Bates writes with wonderful imagery and gives the reader the
feeling of actually sitting in the car, walking the streets of Leavenworth, and
watching the horrors unfold all due to Katrina's one little white lie.
As I read White Lies, I found myself taking issue with the way the author
wrote Katrina as well as the male characters.
You have Katrina, a confused 32 year old who is trying to save face with
the people she works with and doesn't have much of a backbone. Zack, who is a teacher, lives for the wild
side of life while trying to get Katrina to tell the truth but in a painfully
annoying way. Then we have Jack, the token bad boy who sweeps Katrina off her
feet but also has a very dark side which Katrina discovers as he helps keep
those little white lies going. The other characters are uneventful and are
generally only used to keep the story going.
That is why sometimes the story feel like a Lifetime TV Movie.
There were several editing errors where some words were put together for
example "Not to mention thatWashington Poststory."
(Around the 97% mark on the Kindle) As well as quite a bit of language that I
feel wasn't necessary.
It is a killer beach book and at 265 pages you can finish while sitting by
the pool and wonder if the Tall Dark and handsome guy next to you has a deep
dark secret.

Author Biography: Jeremy Bates has spent the last ten years traveling the
world, visiting more than thirty countries. He has lived in Canada, the United
States, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines.
Bates is a graduate of the University of
Western Ontario with a degree in English literature and philosophy. He is a
member of Mystery Writers of America, International Thriller Writers, Inc, and
Crime Writers of Canada.
His frightening debut novel, White Lies,
is set in a small village in the Cascade Mountain range of eastern Washington.
In the book, he succeeds in bringing world-class terror to this tranquil
community.
