Quick Review: 3 stars (out of 5)
Why I Read It: David had it in his pile of books. (I don’t make it to the library very often.)
Where I Obtained the Book: At my local library.
Synopsis: Bliss Cavendar takes up Roller Derby and soon embarks on an epic journey full of a few not-so-awesome realities. Now adapted as the feature film "Whip It!" starring Ellen Page ("Juno") and Drew Barrymore, who also directs.
Review: The book was fun and cute. I cannot imagine my parents ever being okay with roller derby, or myself being the mother of teenagers. It sounds so dangerous. The whole thing with the boyfriend was good, not everything can end happy. Real life is not constant happiness, every book needs a bit of reality. Her parents were normal and I think in a teenagers mind the worse kind. I could see both sides, the mother wanting for her daughter what had made her happy. And the daughter wanting what she thinks will make her happy, being nothing like her mother. Her father was a bit more understanding, but he had to live with his wife(and so side with her.)
The names used were interesting. I haven't seen the movie yet, Whip-it, so maybe I will check that out next. It was a fun quick read.

Author Biography: Shauna Cross is a roller derby athlete, author of Derby Girl, and screenwriter of Whip It!. Her roller derby pseudonym is "Maggie Mayhem," skating for the Los Angeles Derby Dolls.
The book, and film, are fictionalized accounts of an experience skating with the Texas Rollergirls.
