Book Review - Intoxication - Tim Kizer

Title:  Intoxication

Author: Tim Kizer

Review:  This is a freaky story…freaky freaky freaky…  I am not a huge horror fan, I enjoy Stephen King and Koontz in limited doses of horror, The Stand and Tick Tock were some of my favorite.

This story is freaky if I haven’t said that enough.  What is real and what is just in her head?  Psychological thrillers at their best are both and neither at the same time.  This is both and wrapped in a pretty short easy to read little package.

This story read fast and kept my interest, I read it in one sitting and it Freaked me out… Did it really happen this way?  Was this a consequence of a decision she made in a moment of panic or was it only guilt playing in her mind?  This is good and you will enjoy how quick it reads and yet at the same time it won’t let you go.  I would suggest this to anyone who wants a quick thriller with a twist.

He also sent Hitchhiker and I can tell you that if the movie Hitcher hadn't cured me of hitchhiking this little book would have.  Why are some people so out there and into other peoples pain?  Who knows I just don't want to run into them if I can help it.  Pick up both and make sure you sleep with someone or the light on or you won't sleep for awhile.

Synopsis:  For the fans of Stephen King and Dean Koontz...

How do you force a confession out of a coworker trying to poison you? Do you kill those who dismiss your fears and believe you are paranoid? What do you do if you start questioning your own suspicions--and sanity--as you take the law into your hands?

In this disturbing tale of derangement, a young psychopathic woman is slipping into madness as she fights an enemy that may exist only in her imagination. She has to resort to desperate measures when she realizes that a gun, security cameras in her apartment, and constant vigilance will not be enough to survive.

Bonus: "Hitchhiker" by Tim Kizer, the first entry in the As the Darkness Falls series.

From description:

When a serial killer hitches a ride one sunny day in a beautiful California valley, he does not suspect that he may have met his match, who is dead set to take another life. The battle of wits begins and only the most devious mind will survive.

Book Review - Buried Secrets - Joseph Finder - A Nick Heller Novel

Title:      Buried Secrets

Author:  Joseph Finder

Review:  This story grabbed me right off and I was hooked the rest of the time.  I love a good mystery/thriller and this is a good one.  Who done it and the rest is part of what makes this book a winner.

This book was faced paced and kept me reading into the night.  I wanted to know what would happen and if it was going to work out or not.  The idea that someone makes a mistake and actually takes the blame is brilliant and I would like to work with someone like that.  This authors characters are real and have flaws, no one is perfect on real life.

I would have given it a 5 star if the end of one character hadn't been so fast, he was a difficult person and then his demise was swift and why do the bad guys always feel the need to tell how they did everything and then end it? I did like that the real bad guy was extremely nasty, he made for someone you could really hate. My blood pumped harder at the end with not knowing who was going to come up on top. This story was exciting and scary as the author took the reader to many seedy places, and holes in Boston I would not want to venture into on purpose. Great descriptions of the area and having been to Boston recently I could really visualize the landscape.

Why are people the way they are and why are some of us so bad? Rich, poor, needy and scared, we all have more in common then we think and I like the way the author made everyone human in some way. To be super rich sounds great but then again a new set of problems emerges and so maybe not.

I like Nick and think he makes a great character for more books, Dorthy is also likable and unusual. This is a thriller with just a bit of romance added in the mix. Great story and I look forward to the next Nick Hiller story. I would suggest this to anyone who enjoys mystery/thrillers. Check out this book and his first in the series.

Why I Read it:  I signed up for the giveaway on Goodreads, I love a good mystery.

Where I Obtained the Book:  I won the book on Goodreads.

Synopsis:  Joseph Finder introduced Nick Heller, a “private spy” who finds out things powerful people want to keep hidden, to widespread acclaim from the critics and wild enthusiasm from the readers, in the New York Times bestselling novel Vanished. Now, in Buried Secrets, Nick Heller returns, finding himself in the middle of a life-or-death situation that’s both high-profile and intensely personal.

Nick has returned to his old home town of Boston to set up his own shop. There he’s urgently summoned by an old family friend. Hedge fund titan Marshall Marcus desperately needs Nick’s help. His teenaged daughter, Alexa, has just been kidnapped. Her abduction was clearly a sophisticated professional job, done with extraordinary precision. Alexa, whom Nick has known since she was young, is now buried alive, held prisoner in an underground crypt, a camera trained on her, her suffering streaming live over the internet. She’s been left with a limited supply of food and water and, if her father doesn’t meet the demands of her shadowy kidnappers, she’ll die. And as Nick begins to probe, he discovers that all is not quite right with Marshall Marcus’s business. He’s being investigated by the FBI, he has a lot of shady investors, his fund is in danger and now he has a lot of powerful enemies who may have the motivation to go after Marcus’s daughter. But to find out who’s holding Alexa Marcus hostage, Nick has to find out why. Once he does, he uncovers an astonishing conspiracy that reaches far beyond anything he could have imagined. And if he’s going to find Alexa in time, he will have to flush out and confront some of his deadliest opponents ever.

Author Biography:  Joseph Finder’s plan was to become a spy. Or maybe a professor of Russian history. Instead he became a bestselling thriller writer, and winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for Best Novel for KILLER INSTINCT (2006) and winner of the Barry and Gumshoe Awards for Best Thriller for COMPANY MAN (2005).

After taking a high school seminar on the literature and history of Russia, Joe was hooked. He went on to major in Russian studies at Yale, where he also sang with the school's legendary a cappella group, the Whiffenpoofs (and likes to boast that he sang next to Ella Fitzgerald, an honorary Whiffenpoof). Joe graduated summa cum laude from Yale College, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, then completed a master’s degree at the Harvard Russian Research Center, and later taught on the Harvard faculty. He was recruited to the Central Intelligence Agency but eventually decided he preferred writing fiction.

His first book, published in 1983 when Joe was only 24, was RED CARPET: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE KREMLIN AND AMERICA'S MOST POWERFUL BUSINESSMEN, the first book to reveal that the controversial multi-millionaire Dr. Armand Hammer, the CEO of Occidental Petroleum, had worked for Soviet intelligence in the 1920s and 1930s. (This book is no longer in print.)

Joe’s latest novel VANISHED, published August 2009 by St. Martin's Press and an immediate bestseller, introduced his new continuing character, "private spy" Nick Heller. Trained in the Special Forces, Nick is a high-powered intelligence investigator – exposing secrets that powerful people would rather keep hidden. He's a guy you don't want to mess with. He's also the man you call when you need a problem fixed. The second novel in the series, BURIED SECRETS, will be published June 21, 2011.

Book Review - Aching for Marvin - Mehry Inett

Title:      Aching for Marvin

Author:  Mehry Inett

Review:  This is a short story that is fast paced and had its funny moments.  The idea of trying to rekindle a relationship with your kids and mother in-law along is laughable and then the little gift her mother in-law tosses her had me laughing.

The rest of the story was a bit sappy.  The sex scenes were overdone and could have been better written or left to the imagination of the reader.  This isn’t really my thing.  I enjoy romance and even a well written sex scene, but this was neither of those.

If  you enjoy silly short stories and written sex for sex sake then maybe you will enjoy this little story.

Book Review - The One Day Way - Chantel Hobbs

Title:  The One Day Way

Review: I found this book every difficult to get into, it seemed to repeat itself over and over again and I hadn't read any others of hers so I felt a bit lost. I would agree with her that looking at a huge task is difficult and that cutting it into little day to day segments will make it easier to handle.

Weight loss is a goal of most people now days and it is for some a huge task, one they feel sure to fail, this book helps you realize that you can only handle one day at a time and to celebrate on those days that you make it and let the days you don't go away.  Let go of the mistakes they are over and focus on doing your best the next day.  I like the idea of not beating yourself up for eating that brownie, instead do better the next day.

I like the idea of fasting as part of a diet, I think it is a great way to help you realize that food is not controlling you and that you can make it without it for a day and then eat healthy the next.  Fasting has been proven to be healthy as long as it is not done too often.  Once a month or twice is great and it really helps your body.

The overall impression of the book is that it is a good idea and she lays out the steps along with exercise.  I firmly believe that exercise needs to be part of a healthy lifestyle no matter what your age.  My last thought is that this book is pretty much like most diet books.  I have yet to see anything that makes go WOW that is so different.

Why I Read It: This look interesting.

Where I Obtained the Book: I received this book from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing for a book review.

Synopsis: Lose All the Weight You Want, One Meal, One Pound, One Day At a Time!

I've got great news for you: You are about to feel better and look better beginning today! Today is truly a new opportunity for you to reach your weight loss goals. No, you won't fit into your "skinny jeans" today, but I'm going to show you how each day will get you closer to that goal.

Yesterday's mistakes are gone so let them go. You can't control tomorrow, so stop worrying about it. Today is your opportunity to lose weight, get strong, and look great. It won't happen overnight, but you can build a new life by changing your actions immediately and I'm here to show you how to make the changes that will create the new lifestyle you dream of: body, mind, and spirit. Best of all, you will start celebrating right away!

Come on, my friend. Let's get started! By opening this book, I'll show you how to unlock every tool you need to lose weight and get fit —and stay that way for the rest of your life. Success can be yours, what are you waiting for?

Author Biography: I  was born in South Florida on January 30th, 1972. Yep, I’m officially 39 and holding!  My parent’s are Jerry and Sherry Parrish. I also have a younger sister and two younger brothers. You may have just figured it out, I’m the oldest... And because of my birth order, I’ve referred to myself as the “golden child” since I was a young girl. While my parents still laugh about it, my siblings don’t seemed as amused. I suppose they can’t handle the truth (of course I’m kidding, Christy, David and Michael)

At about eight years old was when I first began to notice I was “different”. It was in the second grade when a little friend of mine asked why my legs were so big. I responded, “I’ll ask my mom”, and later when I did, she told me we are all “different” and that was that! For the next few years, “different” went from being a chubby child to over-weight adolescent. Eventually, I went from  heavy teen to obese adult.  Over several years, one pound at a time, I watched the scale go up and up. Sure, I tried diets. I think all of them. Except maybe the Cookie Diet.  I was smart enough to figure out cookies had gotten into this mess, probably making them a main staple wouldn’t deliver much weight loss. I look back and can remember countless programs and plans I tried. It makes me tired to this day just trying to remember them all. I always got results. The same ones. Frustration and misery.

At 21 I finally got there! That is to the 300 pound mark. The good news: I was in love and had a great guy who wanted to marry me. The bad news: I had to find a size 26 wedding dress. I’ll never forget feeling sorry for myself as I looked in the mirror one last time just before I walked down the aisle. All I could think was, everyone in that church is going to wonder why I didn’t lose weight for my big day. And only I would know the truth. It wasn’t that I didn’t care, I just didn’t know how. Eventually I found a good excuse (or so I thought) to put my struggle on hold. I became pregnant with our first child. Instead of attempting to shed the weight after she was born, I decided pregnancy was easier. In those five years, I had three children, Ashley, Kayla and Jake. Too busy to try to lose weight, I put on lots of make-up and a happy face to mask the pain. But everyday I woke up, no matter where I went, I felt the paranoia that other’s could see I was hiding behind humor and a pseudo overly- happy disposition.

It was just after suffering a miscarriage and emergency gall-bladder surgery, that I found myself lower than I had ever been, driving alone in a car. In between sobbing and screaming, I decided to do all I could, I prayed. God, if you care, I’m done. Really, I’m done! Lord, I’m over this pain. I can’t live like this another day. Either let me die or help me change, but please don’t let me stay like this. I need your help. I have nothing left. As I calmed down, I heard these words in a whisper, “You’re not being the best you can be”, over and over. It was the closest thing to a Ten Commandments moment I had ever experienced. And immediately, I saw myself and my weight problem in a brand new light. No longer did I feel like I needed to go out and loose lots of weight in record speed. What was happening was much, much bigger. I was about to begin a life-long journey of simply living to be better!  This took the pressure off to perform well on a diet, and instead offered the peace that weight loss was really possible. All I had to do was begin to approach it one day at a time, one prayer at a time, one pound at time. The simplicity of what God showed me was something I knew the world was missing. Even sitting in my car, at over 350 pounds, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that the weight was already lost, the war was already won, and God was going to use me as a mouthpiece to show others the Way...to true freedom.

And from that day on, despite lots of circumstances out of my control, family illnesses, personal injuries, family vacations, food-filled holidays, even having a fourth child, and lots more challenges along the way, I have stayed the course. I can honestly say that I no longer live in fear of being fat again. I have accepted the love I longed for, and it conquers any doubt or discouragement I may encounter along this road less traveled. All the power I need to be fit and healthy lives within me.

Today, my life’s passion is to help other’s have hope. Not in simply reaching their goal weight, or becoming more fit, but hope in their future. In fact, it’s the reason why I keep writing books and offering solid web-support and advice. I feel blessed that my pain has now produced other changed lives.  When you think about it, nothing could be better than knowing your darkest moments could one day provide a powerful light!

Author interview with S.L. Pierce - Secrets

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me about your book, Secrets.    Which by the way I really enjoyed reading.

1.  Where did you come up with the idea for this book?
The idea for Secrets came from getting tired of reading books where the strong female heroine ended up getting caught by the bad guy.  And the author usually does it by making the woman do something out of character.  I'm sure authors think it adds excitement but it's just insulting.  I wanted a tough woman who wasn't afraid to go after, or even kill, the bad guy and then not feel bad about it.

2.  When you were young what did you want to be when you grew-up?
Until my senior year I wanted to be a lawyer (thanks LA Law) but my math teacher convinced me I should be an engineer, so I did.  Don't worry, it didn't come out of nowhere, I was very good at math and science.  I ended up getting my PhD and working for a few years but I never really loved it.

3.  I love Police Procedurals on TV like; CSI, NCIS, Castle, Law and Order, Bones, etc.  What is your favorite show in this category?
I have been a Law and Order fan since it began.  I think it's because they show everyone contributes to punishing the bad guy.  Ever notice that whoever the show is about is who actually solves the crime?  In one show the CSI team is in the background, in another they are carrying guns and arresting people.  But it doesn't stop me from loving Bones.  I can't get enough of that show, especially since there are no new Law and Order's.

4.  A good mystery keeps you turning the pages, what is your favorite mystery book?
Easy - The Killing Floor by Lee Child.  I loved that book from the moment I read the blurb.  I thought the mystery part was fantastic.  I couldn't put it down until I knew what was going on.  I also love the main character which leads to the next question (have I used love to much?).

5.  Your favorite mystery character?
It's Jack Reacher.  The main character from Lee Child's books.  I like that he is unapologetic.  He doesn't go looking for trouble but he doesn't run from it either.  Mess with him, you get what you deserve.

6.  If you won a trip to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I would go to Sweden.  I've been interested in Sweden ever since I became an Abba fan as a child.  It looks beautiful and peaceful.  Plus I don't enjoy the heat so the moderate temperature would be good.

7.  Do you listen to music when you write?  And if so what do you listen to?
Writing does not come easy to me so I have to have total silence when I write in order to concentrate.  But when I do listen to music it's mostly Top 40 stuff on my iTouch.  Do they still have the Top 40?

8.  What is your favorite thing to snack on when you're bored?
Chips Ahoy cookies.  So bad, I know.  I have to leave the bag in the cabinet so I will be forced to get up and walk to get another.  It doesn't stop me from eating the whole bag, but it does slow me down.

9.  Of all those living, who would you really like to meet and why?
I would like to meet Hilary Clinton.  She has been through so much adversity but still keeps going.  I would like to know where she gets the will to continue.

10.  What would you like to tell our readers about you story?
I would like to say if you are looking for a fast paced mystery with a strong female lead who never needs rescuing, then you will enjoy Secrets.

Thank you for your time and the book, I wish you luck with your writing in the future.  Thanks Lisa

Book Review - Secrets - S. L. Pierce

Title:      Secrets

Author:  S.L Pierce

Review:  Do you have a secret that no one knows, not even your spouse?  Well the main character in this book sure does and it is huge.  This book grabbed me right off and I read it straight through.  I loved the idea of changing one’s life completely around because of the way things were going.

This is a great story that kept me reading.  I loved the Colombo type interview at the end, but it didn’t take away from the fast pace adventure the book became.  I would suggest this to anyone who enjoys a fast paced mystery/thriller/adventure book.  I loved the character and the fact that she took nothing from nobody, she was tough and yet could see another life out there for the taking.

Secrets is a great name for this book and if you think about it, we all have them.  Read this book you will be glad you did.

Book Review - Spiral X - J.J. Westendarp

Title:      Spiral X

Author:  J.J. Westendarp

Review:  A vampire hunter with the Bruce Wayne lifestyle.  This is an interesting idea for a book and especially throwing in the drug usage and abuse into the mix.  The main character is a kick-butt take no prisoners kind of girl and she is in it to win it.  The other characters add a bit of fun and fear as you go along.

I put this book down a lot, I feel asleep a few times reading it and when I saw it was only 259 pages long I was shocked, it seemed much longer.  The author added a few too many twists and turns into the characters life and even her ‘uncle’ was a bit more then the story needed.  Near the end when he was mentioned again I really had to think about whom the heck they were talking about.  I liked the idea and the story wasn’t bad I just think some could have been cut and in other places the author could have expanded the ideas going on in those scenes.

If you like vampires, hunters and a good mystery you will most likely enjoy this book.  Check it out.  I like the cover.

Synopsis:  Cheryl Erikson is a Vampire Hunter with a problem. A dangerous new drug named Plast has found its way onto the streets of Dallas. She would prefer to let the DEA and local law enforcement handle everything, but since the dealers also happen to be vampires, she has no choice but to step in and put a stop to it. With the help of her best friend Virgil and a fellow Hunter named Tank, Cheryl must work to eradicate Plast from the streets of Dallas. It's a task that becomes more difficult as she comes under the gun, quite literally, from a contract out on her head. Coupled with a nosy police detective looking to peg her for a triple homicide, and a sudden interest in her activities from a powerful vampire recently arrived in the area, it's enough to force her to accept help from the least likely of sources, a mysterious Hunter named Rev. Through him, everything she thinks she knows, and everything she stands for, is challenged in ways she never imagined.

Book Review - The Seraph Seal - Leonard Sweet and Lori Wagner

Title:      The Seraph Seal

Review:  This book grabbed hold of me at the beginning with its ‘The world is ending’ idea.  But why and how?  No one knows, but the sun is getting closer everyday and death is everywhere.  Who can save the world and how can they save it?  Good vs. Evil, the four housemen of the Apocalypse, the sun going super nova, tsunamis, floods, earthquakes, and danger around every corner.  How could I put it down?

I like exciting books that keep you turning the page and this is one of those books.  The religious aspect was not over the top, in my opinion.  I thought that the way they used the Bible and the idea that the world will end in 2012 was well thought out and not way out there.  The characters were likeable and the end was interesting.  I read this while my kids watched a movie and I was completely involved in the story that when the movie ended and the kids wanted my attention I wasn’t ready to quit reading.  This is a page turner.

This is a great book for any age.  The language is appropriate for anyone and the story is interesting.  I handed it off to my mother to read next.  If you enjoy fast paced stories with endearing characters and danger, you will enjoy this book.

Quick Review:  4 Stars out of 5.

Why I Read it:  I picked it up at Booksneeze, it looked interesting.

Where I Obtained the Book:  Booksneeze.

Synopsis:  An epic tale of good and evil based on the four horsemen of the Apocalypse found in the book of Revelation.

Using the four horsemen of the Apocalypse to symbolize the four Gospels, four transcendentals, and four forces of the universe (air, water, earth, and fire), Sweet and Wagner weave a fast-paced, end-times tale of good vs. evil and the promise of a new dawn for humanity.

Set in 2048, when planet Earth is suffering from the damaging effects of years of misuse and abuse, cultural history professor Paul Binder receives a mysterious letter that leads him to examine a lost 2nd-century Diatessaron manuscript. Ancient prophecies, cryptic letters, and strange events set him on a course to uncover the missing clues that could lead humanity into a new age. Each character embodies elements of the four horsemen in a race to save the world from total destruction. Layered with forgotten symbolism from the ancient, Jewish, and Christian traditions, the novel is a type of engaged fiction in which the main character's lost journal serves as a guide to the reader in interpreting clues and understanding the novel's conclusion.

 Author Biography:

Book Tour - Book Review - The Mistress's Revenge - Tamar Cohen

Title:      The Mistress’s Revenge

Author:  Tamar Cohen

Review:  I started this book and then immediately did not like the way it was written.  It reminded me of how someone talks when they do not want to be interrupted or answered: they just want you to listen to their woes.  Their talking is annoying and self satisfying only, that is the kind of individual that I would not choose to be friends with for any length of time.  But, as I read further the writing annoyed me less and less.  I realized it was letters she was writing, but come on it was annoying.

*Spoiler Alert *  The story itself was depressing and sad, how many lives were damaged by this affair?  I realize that Sally had a mental breakdown and that is what was ruining her life and those lives around her, but Clive was no better.  Clive had had countless affairs and broken many hearts, thank heaven one finally caught up with him.  How much damage can one person do?

The families that were hurt made me sad, I didn’t care for the story and the problems Sally encountered.  She was her own worst enemy.  Fatal attraction was never one of my favorite movies so I’m not surprised I didn’t really care for this book.  Like I said before, the writing turned me off at the start but improved with time.  I did find it interesting how easy it would be to stalk someone now days with all the social networking we all do.

Revenge is a dish best served cold, or so I’ve heard and Sally is quite cold in this book.

Synopsis:  There’s a fine line between love and hate.

For five years, Sally and Clive have been lost in a passionate affair. Now he has dumped her to devote himself to his wife and family, and Sally is left in freefall.

It starts with a casual stroll past his house, and popping into the brasserie where his son works. Then Sally starts following Clive’s wife and daughter on Facebook. But that’s alright, isn’t it? These are perfectly normal things to do. Aren’t they?

Not since Fatal Attraction has the fallout from an illicit affair been exposed in such a sharp, darkly funny, and disturbing way: The Mistress’s Revenge is a truly exciting fiction debut. After all, who doesn’t know an otherwise sane woman who has gone a little crazy when her heart was broken?

Author Biography: Tamar Cohen is a freelance journalist who lives in London with her partner and three teenage children. The Mistress's Revenge is her first novel.
